Have you tried Lure Coursing for your dog?
It can be beneficial for a high prey driven dog.
Of course the caveat is you must also make it a habit to practice calmness and relaxation so that your dog is not always “on”.

Hildy is a very sweet and friendly dog. She wants to say hi to everybody she sees, pretty much everywhere. She also has overexcitement issues.
Why is this a problem?
Hildy needs to learn that not every human or dog wants her to be in their personal space. This can be a matter of safety around other dogs or people who are afraid of dogs.
In this case, I’m advocating for the public.
It also helps her overexcitement by practicing neutrality around strangers.
It’s good manners for her to learn that invitation is more appropriate than invasion.
I do this by giving her a loose leash and recalling her back to me every single time she assumes she can greet someone and I praise her everytime she comes back to follow me.
As you can see in the end she was understanding the exercise by turning herself around to come back to me before hitting the end of the leash!
Side note: If someone were to ask to “say hi”, I would have said “Sorry No, I’m actually working on her excitement around strangers, but thanks for asking”

When you give your dog a command, the only way your dog will learn that you’re serious about that command is to follow through.
If you sometimes “let it slide”, your dog will learn over time that you are not serious about it.
Here you see Piper’s Mom gives her the “place” command. She complies but was not given the ok to come off of “place”.
When Piper broke place, Mom gives the command again, Piper doesn’t comply so leash pressure is applied. The leash pressure is used to guide her back to where Mom wanted her to go, back on place. The leash pressure is held and then immediately released once Piper is back on place.
It wasn’t a negotiation, Mom stayed there to help Piper do what she was being told to do. THAT is following through.
It also matters HOW you follow through.
Notice Mom stayed CALM, confident, didn’t repeat the command more than twice and her timing was perfect with the release of pressure once Piper got back on place.
Over time Piper will understand that when Mom says something, it’s a lot easier to comply.
Do you follow through on your commands with your dog?

Thresholds are a very easy way to slow down your dog and to teach them to look to you for permission before going through.
This is also a great SAFETY skill for your dog to have!

Having Candace with me during client sessions was always pure joy.
I never had to worry about her making a situation worse with a client’s dog.
After years of anxiety and fear, watching her become a more confident dog will be something I will always remember. ☺️
It’s why when I speak to clients with difficult dogs, I always explain how amazing and resilient dogs are, and that one day they might surprise us in ways we never imagined!

Rolling with Jay Jack was one of my favorite moments while attending his workshop at @k9lifeline in Utah a couple of weeks ago.
For those who don’t know, I’m a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu and Jay Jack is a black belt (in JJ and multiple arts), MMA fighter and amazing dog trainer! As you can tell from watching the video, purple is well below black, and Jay has been a black belt for 18 years! I had a blast (even if it doesn’t look like it LOL)😆
While this was definitely a highlight of my week, my favorite (besides the compliment he gave me afterwards) was when we were done, he explained to everyone in attendance how practicing Jiu-Jitsu/martial arts will make you a better dog trainer, owner and all around better person.
I couldn’t agree more!
The patience, discipline, empathy and emotional management skills you learn in the journey is absolutely priceless.
I highly recommend to any and everybody to find a local Jiu-Jitsu gym. You will never regret it!
Special thank you to my workshop buddy @happysocialdog for the best souvenir: taking this video without me asking!🙏🏼

Anyone who studies martial arts like I do knows that it’s not about size and strength.
It’s about technique.
I apply this concept to leash handling as well.
If you use the proper technique, you can’t be dragged no matter how big or strong your dog is.
This is just the beginning of getting the leash handler to be more relevant to the dog.
Try this and let me know how it goes!
This is a throwback to working with Qi and her dog Daisy the mini australian shepherd.
Qi contacted me because Daisy was reactive to other dogs on walks.
Because Qi was such a fast learner, It didn’t take Daisy long to follow her Mom’s new leadership and this resulted in her not feeling the need to react anymore.
So I set up our 3rd session on my property with dogs that I knew I could trust. My dog Candace the pointer and my buddy’s dog Lana the husky.
The session was going so well so quickly that I decided to give Qi a dog pack walk experience and as you can see both she and Daisy did GREAT!
I love it when unplanned moments like this happen during my sessions!

A lot of clients have told me that their dogs are impossible to walk on leash.
One client once told me that she was literally dragged for a whole block!
Junior here is 110lbs and he’s definitely strong enough to drag me!
So why is he unable to? Because of my TECHNIQUE.
There’s obviously a lot more to why a dog pulls on leash but as far as leash handling goes it is nothing but practice, practice, practice!
