This week our Intro to Equine Tech students put some of their skills to the test ✏️ 📋

In our “Patient/Vet Quiz”, half of the students are the patients and the other half are the vets. The “patient” must accurately describe the symptoms of their horses assigned illness, while the “vet” does a basic health exam and asks questions to diagnose the issue.

After their quiz, students tested their knowledge of the skeletal system by labeling bones and joints.

It’s muscle day in Equine Science I! 💪🏼

Students painted up the horses to show muscle location and discussed the function of various muscles.

Intro to Equine Vet Tech was busy this week learning how to take vital signs!

Students learned how to evaluate respiration, heart rate, temperature, capillary refill and digital pulses.

Our Advanced Reining class!

Students are working on shape, speed control and turnarounds this week. It’s so fun seeing students who started in our intro level riding courses now fine tuning some advanced maneuvers!

Leo the lion is in Germany for the next three weeks to teach horsemanship clinics with DQHA Germany with NCTC Equine Instructor Ellen Black and other clinicians from Texas A&M University!

This week they are hosted by Döring Quarter Horses. We are excited to be in Germany and share our love of the equine industry with other equestrians!

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲!🐴🦁

Did you know, NCTC has around 18 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 horses, many of which are retired show horses!

The average age of our horses is 15 years old, the oldest being our sweet “𝑺𝒊𝒎𝒐𝒏“.
Simon is 24 years old, and we think he is the perfect testimony of how well things last if they are taken care of! We take pride in our high standards when caring for our four legged friends here, we love our Simon, and he loves it here at NCTC!🦁

We’re all smiles now that finals are over! 🥳

During the last week of class some of our equine students were able to get together and celebrate the end of the semester.

The hard work is done for now, it’s time to relax and enjoy summer! ☀️

Hay day!

Did you know that here at NCTC we grow our own coastal hay? We have a hay pasture at the Gainesville campus and as well as the college farm east of campus.

These pastures provide the forage our horses and cattle need throughout the year!

It’s an exciting day! A new reproduction model!

This model was purchased with Perkins grant funds and we are thankful to be able to use it.

We can’t wait to put this model to use in the classroom!

Savannah Snow used her personal experience as a racetrack pony rider to teach her classmates about required equipment, protocols and safety measures.

In this weeks student teaching, Lannie Cory taught her classmates about equine massage therapy. Lannie went over signs of muscle soreness and a variety of massage techniques.

Naomi discussed the components of a rollback, ways to increase draw and quickness and worked with her classmates to improve the maneuver.

This weeks student teaching was on barrel racing! Student Lauren Sicking taught her classmates the history of the sport, pattern basics and then everyone gave it a shot!

It’s always fun to get outside the norm and try something new! We had a blast!
