This beauty is a blessing and a gift!!!
Don't ask her price or who she is without reading the following:
Last fall while looking at potential embryo recipient mares for 2024 for a client, several mares were pregnant. If they had been refused and put back on the trailer they would have been transported to a country to our South and used in horse tripping competitions until lamed and then slaughtered.
Too many times the current horse industry rips my heart out and leaves me deeply sad and despondent. I asked my sweet and long suffering husband if we could please just open a paddock with round bale hay and let them foal in peace.
One particularly poor cremello mare was a body score of 2 and had such sad eyes. She bloomed in the pasture with 6 other pregnant mares and this is her FILLY!
One other mare has had a gorgeous pinto filly (picture in comments) and all will be kept as recip mares. We may be looking for good homes for any c**ts that are born, but we cannot tell you how much joy we have watching the results of our efforts.
We must be good stewards of the animals of the earth. We cannot save them all but we can do what we can do. My husband and I will never die with a lot of money but we will leave this earth knowing that all animals in our care were provided for with kindness and concern.
Please spay and neuter your pets and do not produce any horses that do not have a valued place on this earth❤️❤️❤️

Some days are harder than others. But when the hard days have happy endings we need to be grateful and thank all the good people who make the happy endings possible.
This lil guy was significantly premature and needed some around the clock neonatal intensive care.
So a big thank you to Carlton Crowe for turning his show truck into a foal ambulance..... pulling the back seat, laying down a fleece bed and cranking the heater to its tropical setting.
Thank you Breeding assistant Kelsey Ivey
for holding him in her lap all the way and never losing her beautiful smile.
Thank you Dr Rudy Madrygal, the best Internal Medicine and Neonatal specialist we have ever worked with!!
And the entire NICU team at ESMS in Weatherford Texas for always being there for us and our clients and their foals!!!!
This precious foal is doing well tonight and we will update everyone when he comes back home! He is much loved and well travelled!!!

Meconium is the first bowel movement of a newborn foal. It should be 2 to 3 cups (approximately 1 pound) of a dark sticky substance that passes in 3 or more efforts by the foal.
All meconium should pass within hours of birth. To assist the foal mare owners and experienced foaling assistants will give a foal an e***a after it first nurses or in the first 3 hours of age.
The best e***as are the ready made human phosphate e***as. The volume and lubricated application tip are perfectly suited for foals.
Some foals require more than one e***a and male foals may require more than female foals as their pelvises are smaller. It is very important to be sure all the meconium is expelled since retained meconium can cause colic and can even require surgery to correct.
Avoid soap e***as as they can dry out the delicate lining of the re**um. To prepare a homemade e***a use 1/2 KY jelly or re**al l**e and half warm water.
Preparing for foaling season, you may see foaling personnel in line at Wal Mart or CVS with a shopping cart full of Fleet Enemas and KY Jelly!!!
Always good for sympathy and/or snickers from other customers and checkout clerks .... but horse owners understand!!!!!
Happy Foaling!!!!

Old horse lore proposed that it was Good Luck to find one of these rubbery palm sized masses along with your mares' placenta after foaling.
Hippomanes or Foal Bread
as they are called are an accumulation of waste products in the fetal fluids and range from white to tan to greenish or yellow or black. They have no smell and mares sometimes will eat them. They were first described by the ancient Greeks and the name literally translates "horse madness" and they were believed to be aphrodisiacs!!!!!
So try to find one when a foal is born and.....Get Lucky!!

Every year we are contacted by first time horse breeders concerned that their newborn foal has deformed hooves.
Happily, we are able to assure them that the rubbery finger like protrusions on the bottom of the hooves are completely normal. Sometimes called "fairy fingers" or "golden slippers" their proper name is eponychium a fancy word meaning hoof capsule.
These odd looking projections protect the mares' delicate birth canal from those sharp little hooves as they are in the uterus and pass through the cervix and va**na. They rub off as soon as the foal stands and walks around.
Another example of the wonders of nature!

Why do the majority of mares foal at night???
The answer lies in the fact that the mare is a prey animal and relies first on flight to avoid being predated. While foaling, the mare cannot run away so uses the cloak of darkness to hide away from her enemies. In the wild, however the newborn foal must learn to stand, nurse and be ready to rejoin the herd in the morning.
Therefore, foaling from 10pm to 3am maximizes the chances of success!
Certainly there are mares that foal in the light of day... but in the wild that would have been very dangerous and perhaps deadly !!
And if you wonder why the mare you have been watching for night after night waits for you to go home, get a shower and a cup of coffee to break water?
Well the mare is unique in the animal kingdom and can actually postpone stage 1 labor until she feels safe. Like it or not... human eyes both face forward on the front of our heads like every other predator and yes....to horses we humans are predators just like Lions and Tigers!

The most commonly asked question once a mare gets pregnant is
What is my mares' due date?
Seemingly a simple question for most species but for the mare it is only an estimated day plus or minus 3 weeks!!!!
The gestation period is calculated as 340 days from the day of ovulation, but the mare can foal a full term foal during a range of 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after this one day!
(Personally, from over 5000 foals I have delivered live foals that survived from 297 days of gestation to 392 days!... but these were extreme outlyers)
An easy way to determine the simple due date is to take the day of ovulation, back up one month and add 5 days.
For example:
Mare ovulated March 10 of 2022
Back up one month February 10
Add 5 days.....she is due February 15, 2023
You can do this quickly in your head and you will be correct ....plus or minus 3 weeks!!!!!!

A great way to record and thoroughly track a foals birth is by using a "foaling card". Ours is pictured below. We put it on a clipboard with a pen and hang it on the stall door. Not only is it valuable information for this foals health records, but it provides future foaling referral information. Additionally, it is a reminder of normal time frames and procedures that need to be followed.
If you would like a copy of this blank record that you can customize and use along with a second card complete with normal time frames, just PM us with an email and we will be glad to send them to you!
Happy Foaling!!!!

Allowing foals to run loose while moving their mothers to and from pasture or breeding stocks can be treacherous.
Try this easy and no purchases necessary (everybody has a halter hanging around).
We call it suitcasing a foal. Stops them from running off, laying down or flipping over. We add a foal halter and lead after a couple weeks. Then no longer need the halter/harness.
Happy foaling!!!!!
