It is the right time of year for this toxic plant. Crotalaria (also called rattlebox) is a toxic plant that to horses. It contains pyrrolidizine alkaloid, which causes acute or chronic liver damage. It can quickly lead to irreversible liver failure if a horse eats enough in a short time period. Signs your horse has maybe eaten it are: diarrhea, weight loss, yellow gums and eyes, loss of appetite, sunburn more easily than normal, and/or neurological signs (head pressing, change in behavior, etc). If you have it in your field we highly recommend you remove it. Let’s keep our horses safe!
