University of Florida Model United Nations

University of Florida Model United Nations This is the official page of the University of Florida Gators Model United Nations Team. Feel free to explore and ask questions! via Zoom every Wednesday.

UF Model UN travels throughout Florida and the country. Our club competes at conferences where we simulate and debate international issues as if they were actual United Nations sessions. UF MUN also does a great deal of work to raise awareness for our club in Gainesville community with various events and fundraisers. As advocates for Model United Nations, our cub promotes and builds Model UN progr

ams in high schools by hosting a high school model UN conference called Gator Model United Nations. (www.gatormun.org) We also host a college level conference called the Florida Crisis Simulation. (www.floridacrisissimulation.org)

Over the past few years, the UF MUN team has grown to be very active on campus and on the national MUN circuit. Our team is ranked both competitively and for the conferences put on by our organization each year. Our weekly meetings are held in Fall and Spring semesters at 7:00 p.m. in the Reitz Union and at 8:30 p.m. However, you can get involved at any time by joining our group on Facebook under "UF Model United Nations."

Member spotlight time!! Meet Miranda Ferguson! She is a third year computer science engineering major with a minor in Russian, but she’ll be graduating on May 5th (a whole year early)! She first began participating in MUN during her freshman year of high school and has been incredibly involved on the collegiate level. She has staffed GatorMUN XIV’s Summum Britannia Ad Hoc and FLCS VI’s Ministry of Magic. Additionally, she has directed two committees (GatorMUN XVI’s MACUSA and FLCS VII’s Looking Glass Wars), served on secretariat as GatorMUN XV’s Undersecretary General of Crisis Committees, and traveled to two conferences (McMUN 2018 and VICS 2019). Outside of MUN, Miranda is an active member of the engineering sorority Phi Sigma Rho and a former Freshman Leadership Council member. While she may be graduating this year, Miranda has loved every moment of debate MUN has given her and credits her time in the organization with making her a better public speaker. She’ll be moving to Washington DC to start a new job in the summer and hopes that the NCSC team reaches out!

Member spotlight time!! Meet cole Hersom! Cole is a Sophomore student majoring in Animal Science. He began participating in MUN his freshman year at UF, first competing at RTC that fall semester, and he’s been hooked ever since. Cole loves MUN for both the people involved in the club, and for the lively debate to be had. Through MUN he’s gotten to interact with a wide of array of people and their unique stories and perspectives, and it’s been one of his favorite experiences in his college career so far. Outside of MUN Cole is involved in the UF Wildlife Society and working at UF Meat Processing. But by far his favorite hobby is watching sporting events, just don’t ask him to play basketball. Cole has travelled to a number of conferences including RTC, NCSC (twice), SRMUN, BeachMUN and will be travelling to VICS in the coming weeks. This past year he served as the Undersecretary General of Delegate Operations for GatorMUN XVI (the best conference). He looks forward to the fun and experience that he’s sure to enjoy in MUN going forward.

Happy Wednesday!! We’re excited for you to meet this week’s member spotlight, Zahra Khan! She is a Sophomore majoring in journalism. She is an avid member of Sigma Kappa, Global Ambassador for International Studies Abroad and Gators Salsa. Her favorite part of MUN is improving her eloquence, debate skills and creativity all while getting to know her team. She has attended her first college conference this past weekend at VICS and enjoys staffing GatorMUN and FLCS every year. She loves MUN so much so that she volunteers to be a Director outside of the club at SWFLMUN, a conference she’s been competing and staffing at for six consecutive years. She has been a part of MUN for six years, has attended 24 conferences and has held positions such as Director of Finances, Director of Conferences and Deputy Secretary-General. Above all she would like her new team to know: “When I was at the White House this past fall, I realized how much MUN has taught me and couldn’t wait to return in the spring. I’m so honored to have a team that’s so invested in member development and that’s recognized me as a leader. I look forward to getting to know my team over the next two years.”

Happy Wednesday!!!! We’re excited for you to meet this week’s member spotlight, Olin Calvin!
Olin is in his sixth-year at the University of Florida and is currently working towards a PhD in Nuclear Engineering Sciences at UF. Olin graduated with his Bachelor's of Science in Nuclear Engineering from UF in 2017.
Outside of MUN, Olin is involved in Student Government at UF as the leader of the Graduate and Professional Coalition in Student Senate.
Olin's favorite part of Model United Nations is staffing committees that serve to educate students not just about real-world issues, but also how to effectively communicate their ideas for solving problems and work to build consensus among their colleagues, both skills that everyone should have regardless of their major or profession.
Olin is a seven-time Crisis Director, having directed crisis committees for GatorMUN XI through XIV and for FLCS IV, V, and VI. Olin is also a four-time Crisis Coordinator for GatorMUN XV and XVI and FLCS VII and VIII. In his freshman year, Olin staffed UF Model UN's first 24-hour crisis committee an experience he describes as something that is, and should only be, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Olin has competed at several conferences while in Model UN, winning awards at conferences hosted by FSU, UNC Chapel Hill, Sante Fe, and UVA. Olin was an active part of UFMUN intramural volleyball team and was awarded the "Misty Mae-Traenor" Volleyball MVP superlative his sophomore year.

It’s member spotlight time!!! Our member spotlight of the week is Marcos! He’s a first year student and is a Microbiology major. Outside of MUN Marcos enjoys working out and going on runs to destress. His favorite thing about MUN is the people and how welcoming they’ve been throughout the year! He’s only travelled to TechMUN this semester and competed in a crisis committee for the first time, but had lots of fun and looks forward to traveling more often with the team in the future. Marcos has also staffed FLCS in the Cara al Sol: The Spanish Democratic Transition and was the Assistant Director for the International Labor Organization at GatorMUN, and he is hoping to get more involved in the following years. Another club that he’s involved in on campus is NAMI: A Helping Hand, which works towards increasing mental health awareness. At home he enjoys volunteering for the Humane Society.

It’s member spotlight time!!
Sarah Carroll, is a fourth year at the University of Florida pursuing a double major in Political Science and Women Studies with a concentration Eastern-Central European Studies. She *finally* just finished her reign as the Secretary-General for the Florida Crisis Simulation, UF MUN’s collegiate conference. Sarah has been with the FLCS team since day 1, acting as the USG of Public Relations for two years before becoming the Sec-Gen. She has also directed committees such as "The Hungarian Revolution" and “The International Labour Organization” for our High School Conference; GatorMUN. Outside of UF’s conferences, Sarah is a competitive traveler for our Model United Nations team, competing on the circuit in conferences like NCSC, VICS, UNMUNC, MUNE, and &MUN. He goal for her “senior spring” is to survive traveling to all three conferences on our clubs roster. Since its sadly her last year in MUN, Sarah will be heading to Hungary for her gap year before pursuing a Masters in Global Economic Studies. Sarah has spent the last three years studying the Hungarian language and just returned from interning in Budapest, Hungary this past summer, which makes her choice to spend another year even easier. In her free time, she is known for taking hikes, going to music festivals, and singing the karaoke version of "Come on Eileen." Catch her at “Dog” up until graduation (peep the shirt).
