Case of the Week: Bladder Stones!

Bladder stones (uroliths) can form due to diet, infections, or genetics, and they often cause discomfort, frequent urination, or even life-threatening obstructions. In this case, the stones were too large to pass naturally, so we performed a cystotomy (surgical removal of the stones).

Surgery was a success, and our patient is already feeling much better!

Swipe to see the surgery in action and the impressive size of these stones!

Would you have guessed a dog could have these inside its bladder? Let us know in the comments!

Case of the Week: The Microchip Mystery

Last week, a cat presented with a large, firm, rock-hard lump (about 3 cm) on its back. Given its unusual nature, we took X-rays—and to our surprise, right in the middle of the mass was a microchip.

At this point, there were two possibilities:
1️⃣ A rare inflammatory reaction to the microchip
2️⃣ Cancer potentially linked to the microchip

To get definitive answers, we surgically removed the mass. The surgery went smoothly, and the post-op site looks great. The next step? Biopsy! We’ve sent the mass out for further testing to determine its exact nature.

Check out the images:
📸 The X-ray showing the microchip within the mass
📸 The mass after removal (pen for scale—this thing was no joke!)
📸 The post-op incision site looking clean

We’ll update once the biopsy results are in! Have you ever seen something like this before? Let us know!

📢 Veterinary Insight: Understanding Injection Sites in Pets! 🐶💉

Ever wondered where your pet receives injections and why? Different medications require different routes to be effective. Here’s a breakdown of common injection sites in dogs:

🔴 Intravenous (IV) – Directly into the vein for fast absorption (e.g., cephalic, jugular, saphenous veins).
🟡 Subcutaneous (SubQ) – Just under the skin, commonly used for vaccines and fluids (e.g., scruff, flank, belly).
🟢 Intramuscular (IM) – Injected into the muscle for slower, steady absorption (e.g., triceps, quadriceps, epaxial muscles).

Understanding these locations helps ensure safe and effective treatment for your furry friends! 🐾💙 Always consult your veterinarian for proper administration.

Case of the Week: Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) – A Life-Threatening Emergency

This case highlights a classic emergency every dog owner should be aware of—gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat.

The first X-ray (taken seven months ago) shows a normal stomach. The last X-ray, taken today, reveals a twisted stomach filled with air. The part that should be on the bottom is now on top! You’ll also notice white metal objects—those are ligation clips from a previous surgery.

Symptoms that led to this diagnosis:
• Repeated vomiting (about 15 times)
• Producing only wet foam
• A rapidly expanding abdomen

As soon as we heard the symptoms, we suspected GDV. The stomach was distended like a basketball, confirming this was a surgical emergency.

What we did:
✔️ Untwisted the stomach
✔️ Emptied its contents
✔️ Performed a gastropexy (suturing the stomach to the body wall to prevent future twisting)

The surgery went well, and this pup is now on the road to recovery!

⚠️ GDV is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate intervention. If your dog shows signs of severe bloating, unproductive vomiting, or distress, seek veterinary care immediately.

🩺 Case of the Week: A Mystery Object Causes Trouble! 🐱

This curious kitty came in after experiencing persistent vomiting. X-rays revealed a strange object lodged in the intestines—metal on one end and a plastic cup on the other. We weren’t sure exactly what it was, but one thing was clear: it had to come out!

Our skilled surgical team successfully removed the foreign object, and we’re happy to report that our feline friend is on the road to recovery. This case is a great reminder to keep small, tempting objects out of reach of our curious pets!
