This is Quetzalli. She is a Xoloitzcuintli, an intelligent, loving breed sometimes seen as undesirable due to their lack of hair. “Quetzalli means ‘beautiful feather’ in Nahuatl,” her human says. “I named her to honor her pre-Hispanic roots. She grew into the name, and carries it with grace and kindness.”

As self-appointed Xolo ambassadors, Quetzalli and her human use artistry and nontoxic acrylic paint to prove how beautiful her breed truly is. “The way people light up when they see her walking down the street is really special,” she explains. “They’ll tell me she looks like Dante from Coco, or an alebrije.”

“An unkempt Xolo can get acne, or skin sores, just like a human being. Quetzalli has a vigorous skincare routine and a varied appetite, and her spa days and meal plans are often more elaborate than my own, keeping her glowing and healthy! We’re trying to change the way people see this beautiful, ancient breed. They almost went extinct a few decades ago, and I can’t imagine a world without my Quetzalli.” 14/10 (follow )

Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise and the world's oldest living land animal, estimated to be around 192 years old in 2025. He lives on the island of St. Helena, where he's roamed the grounds of the governor's mansion since the late 1800s. Jonathan's exact birth date is unknown, but the current governor has declared his official birthday as December 4, 1832.
