The Galax Carroll Grayson Animal Shelter is a regional shelter operated jointly by the three local governments under the requirements of the Code of the Virginia. The shelter accepts animals as required under the Code and works to place animals back with their owners, adopt them to new owners, or place them with other non-profit animal welfare agencies that may be able to adopt them. Animals are t

ransferred on a first come first serve basis, so always check with Shelter staff prior to see if an animal is still available. If you are interested in becoming an animal welfare agency, please call 276-236-5773.Effective Aug. 30, 2016, SHELTER HOURS:(Open to the public) Tuesday – Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.& Friday & Saturday 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM INFORMATIONVirginia State law requires:* Anyone adopting a shelter animal must have it spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption.* Adoption fee: $100.00 for dogs. $85.00 for cats* You must live in Galax, Carroll, Grayson or an adjoining Virginia county to adopt an animal.Code of Virginia 3.2-6546.D.(2)(3)(4) states:2. Adoption by a resident of the county or city where the shelter is operated and who will pay the required license fee, if any, on such animal, provided that such resident has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment;3. Adoption by a resident of an adjacent political subdivision of the Commonwealth, if the resident has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment;4. Adoption by any other person, provided that such person has read and signed a statement specifying that he has never been convicted of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment and provided that no dog or cat may be adopted by any person who is not a resident of the county or city where the shelter is operated, or of an adjacent political subdivision, unless the dog or cat is first sterilized, and the shelter may require that the sterilization be done at the expense of the person adopting the dog or cat.

Meet Oreo!
Some of you may have already met him at the High Country Lights a few weekends ago, but for those who didn't. This poor 10-month-old puppy had to spend his first Christmas in the shelter and is now having to spend his first New Years here as well. he is looking for a change this upcoming year. He loves people and gets along well with other dogs. His adoption fee is sponsored and he is neutered. Come give this sweet boy a loving home for the new year the shelter is open till 5pm today. We are closed tomorrow but we will resume normal hours on Friday.

Meet Fuzzball and Purr Purr, due to no fault of their own they were returned to us. Purr Purr is 11 years old and is 15lbs! Fuzzball is 3 years old and weighs 12lbs. We would love for them to be adopted together, as they are used to each other's presence. These chunky babies are very sweet and have been indoor most of their lives. Meet Sally, our cat in foster. This sweet baby is 14 years old. She is spayed, and her adoption fee is sponsored. Her whole world was flipped upside down when her previous owner passed. She loves to be brushed and loves curling up in blankets for snuggle time. She is doing well in her foster home, just awaiting a home for the rest of her years to come.
