Don’t let your pets medication bake on your porch or in the mailbox. It’s not a theoretical problem—we’ve seen the pet health implications of improperly stored/transported medications first hand at our practice.

With several parts of the U.S. under extreme heat threats, experts warn that those hot temperatures can damage medications and ramp up side effects.

Message from Dr. Blake: Last night, after hours, my dog Bodin had a life threatening stomach bloat. I was able to decrease the bloat and make him more stable by passing an orogastric tube and by administering iv fluids. However, his gut began to twist and he started to decline. It became clear that for a successful outcome Bodin needed a higher level of care with an emergency surgery and a complete care team. As a doctor, it’s important to know when your patient requires more help than what you yourself can provide. I’m so thankful that the care team at Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Byron Center was there to help and get Bodin back to my family this afternoon.

Not everyone cares who owns their vet clinic. But we think it’s important! We are proud to be one of the few independent practices in Kalamazoo County still around. As members of the Independent Veterinary Practitioners Association we’re fighting against the tide of consolidation.

“You think it’s time to start the tick preventives?” …we get this question often and we are never sure how to best respond. Adult deer ticks only feed from October to May. So if you’re just starting—you’re too late! Other species feed during other times of year. We recommend once monthly, year round. If you ask if it’s time to start, the answer will always be yes!

This is a REAL threat. We have lost patients at Galesburg Veterinary Clinic due to blue green algae toxicosis. Very dangerous. Use caution.

🌊 Public Health Advisory issued for Austin Lake due to a suspected harmful algal bloom.

To avoid getting sick, people and pets should avoid direct contact with water that appears blue-green, or water that looks like it has a green sheen or spilled paint on its surface.

Everything we do as a practice is done in an effort to ensure you, your pet, and our comminity have a healthy and sustainable future. "Everything" includes the little things--like our conscious decision to reduce single-use plastic pollution by stocking our clinic with biodegradable vials and gloves from KVP renewables. They require 42% less energy to produce, they're 100% plant based, and they completely degrade when exposed to heat and moisture within 3-6 mo. These aren't new efforts at our clinic, but we could do a better job communicating about how we think of health more broadly. HealthCARE extends beyond the exam room!

Pause before reaching for a pet supplement when you’re at the store. They’re still drugs. Just because they’re easier to obtain or marketed as “natural” does not mean it is more safe for your pet. Always consult a vet before starting a new medication or supplement.

Manufacturers of a class of food-derived supplements called nutraceuticals often make statements about their health value that are hard to verify, which can cause safety and efficacy issues

👀 🍔 As we continue to share the importance of a proper nutrition and diet for our pets during today's theme of "Nutrition and exercise matter," it's important to remember that human food has a different caloric equivalency for our pets.

Remember, more treats doesn't equal more love and maintaining your pet’s healthy weight gives your pet the best chance of living a healthier and happier life.

Disappointing stats were released that showed only 1 out of every 4 dogs consistently receive appropriate heartworm prevention. Heartworm disease is an awful, life-threatening, difficult to cure condition and is completely preventable. Once monthly, year round administration of preventives is recommended—even in Michigan.

Our North Star

We believe in building and preserving connections between people, pets, and the places in which they live.

We understand that your pet is a part of your family and we recognize that families are inextricably linked to place. Everything we do is done in an effort to ensure you, your pet, and your community have a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable future. We do this by being actively engaged with our local region and by providing a broad range of veterinary services with individualized care, compassion, and a commitment to excellence and service to others. Ultimately, we not only value your business, but the intrinsic worth of you and your pet.

We acknowledge the need for locally owned clinics with a personal touch. It is Galesburg Veterinary Clinic's wish to restructure the prevailing value systems embraced by the more consolidated hospitals by providing consistent and individualized care. Our services are provided by a doctor who will know your pet, and deliver care thoughtfully and at a fair price. We have only three stakeholders— People, Pets, and Place — and although we strive to be profitable, profitability and growth are not innate tenants of our practice philosophy but a means to preserve and improve the environment, animal resources, public health, and quality of veterinary care we provide.
