Just a PSA for all the parents and mentors taking youth this weekend. New rules limit the 2 day youth hunt to **1** bearded turkey harvest and you have to hunt the zone for which the tag you are using is good for. Previous years you could shoot more than one and the tag was good state wide. Good luck kids! Looking like a great weekend to hunt turkeys.

Do I have any customers that have a deer head at pigeon falls meat to pick up to bring in to mount or do skull yet? I have a customer that had to leave town unexpectedly for a bit and is looking to have me pick it up for him. Just seeing if someone could save me a trip and some time? Thanks

Trading on deer hides again this year, gloves, hats, knives, ect. If you pull the tail off while skinning please keep and bring with hide.

I am still buying buck capes too for mount replacement but will be more picky as the deer have really been getting tick rubbed.

Also please don't drag deer hides through showroom unless they are boxed or bagged. I also have tubs you can use. If you have a bunch come in and see us and I'll have you drive around back to unload. Good luck and be safe everyone.

I was meaning to introduce these two before season started but today is as good as any since this fall really flew by and it's Veterans Day. Meet Ridge, an Army Veteran, and his deer tracking lab Lukin. Some of you have probably already been greeted or helped by them since Ridge has been a full time taxidermist assistant for a little over a year now in the shop and helped off and on for a year and a half or so before that while he was still taking some classes. Ridge has been a great addition to the shop to help us maximize quality production and assist customers more regular hours now that I have two young boys and continue commerical fishing summers in Alaska. I still do all the essential mounting and clay work of the faces and final finish work while Ridge has become very proficient from learning my techniques and assisting with all the other important and time consuming aspects that go into producing quality taxidermy such as caping, fleshing, prepping forms and capes, and putting skins over the forms and sewing them up for me to put the final touches on. Just wanted to introduce them and let everyone know you are in good hands if you happen to be in the shop when I am not there or busy with other customers and these two are there to help. Lukin is about as much help as Layla so don't expect too much except some loving 😉.

Also if you are in need of a tracking dog for a fatal wounded deer Ridge and Lukin can assist you with that too (not a service of Twisted Tines Taxidermy). Thank you to everyone who has already brought their trophies in and good luck to everyone still chasing theirs. Hope to see you soon.

Omg and this is why skinning for cape is important and this one is even from a processor. With a tag marked cape for mount. You don't even want to see the capes I got from an outfitter the other day... 🤦

Cut where the blue lines are please

11/05/2023

Seems I need to share this video again on how to skin a deer for shoulder mount. Make these cuts keeping all the white hair on the inside chest piece and all the brown hair on the outside and we are golden. Skin the rest of the hide down like normal and as close to the head as possible and cut it off. Also don't split them down the back of neck and bring the whole hide in. I will cut it off the length I need and trim it up. These cuts are the ONLY cut you need to make to properly skin one for a mount. Good luck everyone with tags in pocket yet.

Results of the age guessing contest.

Well we had some great guesses. Like many I initially visually was guessing the two at 9-10+ and the older one at 12-13+. All samples received an A grade for aging and ages are as follows with Annaliese Wilhelm guessing the oldest at 16 or "16.5". She will receive a sweatshirt. Nobody got the combined age of 43 but off by only one year was Adam Murkowski and Katie Iselin guessing 42 and 44 and they will each receive a t-shirt. Will PM to get sizes for order. Thanks everyone it was fun.

13 long bow doe
14 one with the cupped front teeth
16 oldest with almost no fronts left

If these three smart old does averaged 1.5 fawns each for 40 combined years they would have produced roughly 60 fawns or more in 15 years and likely out survived most of their young. Pretty interesting to think about and think back to what we were doing 13-16 years ago.

Little contest for everyone. Guess the combined age of all three does and the age of the oldest one. Hint they are much older than you would think. I've visually aged a lot of deer over the years for customers and am usually pretty on or close once we get the cementum aging back and I even under estimated these does by quite a bit. Closest guess for each on combined age and oldest each will get new Twisted Tines Taxidermy apparel to size once printed. A few people I told already so if you know or were told the answers please don't post. Will post results Monday evening.

Most hunters would be lucky to kill one deer as old as these in their life. I was lucky enough to take 3 of them this season. With limited time to hunt again this year and mature bucks being few and far between I took advantage of the opportunities I had to do some herd control on the farm. The first one I took early November with my long bow, the next two came during a late season sit 3rd week in December to break in the new Mathews Phase 4 after getting stuck in impassable snow storms trying to get across SD and had to turn back home from a planned mule deer hunt. The second amazing part of these three does is that 2 of them had small amounts of milk yet so they both had living fawn(s) still in 2022. Pretty cool to see how healthy and smart these deer can be.

If you ever want cementum aging done on your deer from your hunts to know the exact age we can send them in for you in bulk at the end of the year. It's the cheapest way to get them aged.

Was another great WI deer season at the shop. Congrats again to all our great customers.

If you have deer hides to trade in yet, get them in ASAP. I expect the hide truck to be doing a clean up run in the next couple weeks and I will be done taking hides after that.

Skulls- If you still have skulls to clean, get those in ASAP as well before they rot. You get a better skull back and there will be an additional $30 charge for cleaning rotten skulls this year.

With all the capes out to the tanneries we have started back full time working to finish up all the mount projects from 2021 and will be starting the 2022 mounts in the next couple months.

Thanks again for another crazy busy season. Keep us in mind when looking for Vortex Optics, Predator Camo for spring hunting, and archery products like bow accessories, arrows, broadheads, ect.

Still taking deer hides until some time in January after the season ends. Please get em in and don't let them sit and rot in the shed or garage.

If you don't want a trade item for your hides you can also donate them here or next to the carcass dumpster in Trempealeau. Donated hides will be sold and profits will go to G-E-T Trap Shooting Team.

Good luck this season everyone. Just want to put out some annual reminders. If you have any questions about proper handling or skinning of your animals don't hesitate to ask. Please call or text ahead of time to setup a time to drop off/pick-up. Week day hours should be about every day 9-5:30pm. Possibly open earlier or later most week days but need to setup a time to make sure someone will be available. Weekends will be by appointment only. We will still be offering our fast 4 week or less turn around on standard deer skull cleaning and most other mounts will be running 7-12 month completion again. If you are wondering about any prices our standard price list is always up to date on the website as well as some basic field care tips but if you have any questions give me a call. If you still have mounts left with us from last season the deer mounts are still on pace for what we quoted you however we are slightly behind on lifesize mounts, bears, and some western game due to tanneries and supplies but we are working as hard and efficient as possible to get caught up on the large volume of mounts brought in and will let you know as soon as your mount is complete. Hope everyone has a safe and successful season. Kyle

Just want to give a quick update. Hope all the youth are having a good weekend!

I finished mounting all the pre-gun 2020 deer last week and they will be finished in the next couple weeks. Will be mounting the last of the bears and elk this week and starting on 2020 gun deer next week so if you still have your rack please drop them off asap. We are in very good shape considering we took in a year and a half worth of deer heads last year and looks like I will be very close on estimated completion times. I appreciate everyone's patience and business in such a crazy year.

This year is shaping up to be a really good one again so I ask everyone to please try and call/text ahead with a name and what you have for me so I can plan out my days as I'm trying to balance mounting heads and skin and flesh the new ones in through this next busy stretch coming up. I've been working late nights trying to get caught up but am open most week days 10:00-5:30 for drop offs right now and by appointment only on the weekends or after weekday hours.

Standard deer skulls will be done in 2-4 weeks again this year. I am also buying capes again but I will probably be more picky this year so make sure you look them over for hair rubs, wounds, and tattered ears. Current prices on mounts can be found on my website and I can give quotes on any custom jobs not listed.

Last but not least DON'T drag your deer behind a 4wheeler, put it on the rack, in a sled, or at the very minimum tie the head up on the cargo rack so the shoulders are off the ground. Even dragging by hand over rocks and logs can rub the shoulder hair off. It will cost you a new cape or you'll have a sub par mount with a rubbed cape. Also don't long cut you deer cape up the back of the neck. Tube the neck and cut off close to the head.

Good luck everyone! Cooler weather is on its way!

I am considering selling hunting blinds and products from Zero 4 Outdoors, made in Portage, WI at the shop. Multiple sizes and configurations for gun, bow, or gun/bow combo. They are also coming out with an e-bike and other products. Message me with questions or to get a spot on order. Bear and Turkey applications are due today.

Also if any of you or your friends still have skulls to get cleaned please don't wait until the stink reminds you to bring it in. Fresh heads are the key to the best quality skull mounts.
