Do you have a hyperthyroid cat? Meaning its thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormone. There are 4 primary ways to treat this now. Methimazole in the new liquid form shown below, methimazole tablets, prescription diets, and radioactive iodine 1-131 therapy. Cats afflicted with hyperthyroidism usually develop a variety of signs that may be subtle at first but become more severe as the disease progresses. The most common clinical signs of hyperthyroidism are weight loss, increased appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Hyperthyroidism may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, and hyperactivity. The coat of affected cats may appear unkempt, matted, or greasy. We carry 3 treatment options in house, and we are fortunate to have a specialty clinic close by in Nashville that now performs radioactive iodine treatments.
