We are 3 hours into a happy productive day (52 surgeries) here at SSNA. A clinic full of great staff and volunteers and clients here to do the right thing for pets and our community. A cat room full of trapped community cats and a dog room full of nothing but Pitties!

Mr. Brown was our last client to check in this morning, patient 64! He didn’t want Mama Cat to have another litter. He is working hard to trap and transport all of the feral cats on his property to SSNA for spay/neuter, vaccinations, de wormer and ear tips. Thank you! 🐱 ♥️

Being driven by our mission and solution focused, spay/neuter of pit bull type dogs is one of our top priorities.

The common goal of animal
welfare groups is to reduce shelter intake, euthanasia and dog/cat homelessness which results in so much suffering. That means we need to focus on the surgeries that matter most. Medium and large breed dogs must be priority. (And cats, all cats!) So why don’t clinics temporarily stop offering services to the dogs that are not filling shelters - certain popular breeds in demand and small dogs? It seems like such common sense to really focus on and solve the problem.

Every day at SSNA starts with a hard working staff and lots of people doing the right thing for their pet, a shelter pet or a community cat. Here are some pictures from Friday. We ended the week with 170 surgeries:
46 dog spays
33 dog neuters
52 cat spays
39 cat neuters
The average weight of dogs at our clinic last week was 51 pounds. This is important! And we will do it all again this week with 172 dogs and cats on the schedule! Saving lives through prevention every day.

We had such a wonderful time with Ponce Law and friends tonight at Plaza Mexican Bar and Grill. We raised over $2200 to help dogs and cats in need. We appreciate each and everyone of you who came out to support our mission. We enjoyed getting to spend time with everyone. As always, the music and food were fantastic. 🥰 Just a great night!

You just found a group of tiny newborn kittens and their mother is nowhere to be seen. Before that rescue instinct kicks in and you scoop them up, take a deep breath, step back and evaluate the situation. In most cases, removing the kittens is not the best response.
Healthy kittens? Give mom time.
Mother cats may leave their kittens for several hours at a time. If the kittens are warm and don’t appear sick or in distress, their mom is likely nearby, getting food or hiding from you.

Shelters and rescue groups are full.
If you do scoop up those tiny kittens, plan to bottle feed and raise them. And please, make a plan to Spay/Neuter every cat in the area!

We swaddle all of our cats and kittens like lil fluff burritos after surgery to keep them warm. As seen below, Dylan wrapped one of our gorgeous patients.

Trapped community cats will be accepted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in June between 8:30 and 9:00 am. "Stand By" cats should be in live-traps, covered with a sheet or towel. (Our surgery schedule is Tuesday through Friday in June. We will be closed on Mondays)

An eartip is not “ugly”, but rather, shows someone cared enough to have the cat altered and vaccinated. 😻 Surely the cat doesn't care part of his ear is missing, since it is painless. Only humans (in all our vanity) care that the cat doesn't look like all the other cats. Look past the eartip, the size of the eartip, the angle of the eartip. None of that matters as much as the fact that someone took the time to have the cat altered. ❤️

There are kind people around the country who keep an eye on community cats in their neighborhoods, helping to get the cats fixed through TNR programs. Ear-tipping allows them to tell from a distance whether or not a community cat has been spayed or neutered. That tipped ear saves the cat the stress of being trapped and anesthetized a second time.

Ear-tipping can also help anyone who is feeding the cats keep track of them, and notice if a new cat has joined the community. And it lets animal control officers know that a cat benefitted from TNR and has been seen by a veterinarian. In short, an ear-tip tells everyone that the cat has someone who has invested time and resources in his or her well-being.

Gloria Fields from Westmoreland is making sure her dog, Hope, is healthy and does not contribute to pet homelessness by having her spayed and vaccinated courtesy of MuttNation Foundation. Miranda Lambert of country music fame created this foundation to help more people get their pets spayed or neutered. We appreciate this grant funding. It allows SSNA to help people and animals in need of assistance.
