This is a great example why dental is so important. It does not matter if you have a $500 horse or a million dollar horse. ALL horses should be getting proper care. And it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your horse is receiving proper dental care. Not just removal of sharp points but correcting malocclusions and balancing the mouth.

Here’s an interesting one! Tooth extracted. A horse we saw a few weeks ago presented with weight loss and dropping hay. Well here’s our cause!
Unfortunately this was missed due to previous dentals being done without a speculum or headlamp. Luckily we were able to make him feel much better and put some weight on him!

This horse was presented to us by the owners in need of a dental. This sweet boy already had a dental performed a few months ago. So why are we here working on him shortly after? The reason for our visit was because he had a “smile” on his incisors. A “smile” or a ventral curvature creates a camming effect and prematurely separates the molars taking away the horse’s ability to masticate food properly. Its not just about the points!! Powerfloating allows us to correctly reduce a maloccclusion like this one so he can chew away happily! Equine dentistry has evolved immensely and is no longer just about knocking off points.

Routine dental on this mare slight 106 and 206 ramp and slight 311 and 411 ramp and minor buccal and lingual points.
This mare is done routinely and only slight corrections are made. She will have a functional mouth for a lifetime.

Dentals are quite overlooked. Make sure you stay on top of your appointments and remember preventative maintenance!! You should be seeing your dental provider once twice a year. Make sure you are receiving the best quality care possible and look in the horse’s mouth before and after, ask questions!!!

VENTRAL CURVATURE (Smile) on your horses incisors. The picture below shows an example it could be less or more significant of a “smile”.

A ventral curvature happens when the lower corner (303 and 403) incisors erupt taller than the upper incisors (103 and 203). During mastication a camming action happens and premature molar separation follows. With premature molar separation your horse will start to show issues with mastication and improper molar wear. The solution to correct a ventral curvature is to do an incisor reduction within the guidelines we follow that are set forth with the IAED.

Out In Tennessee and had a new client reach out for a horse that was dropping a lot of food. Removed a mobile tooth fracture and decided to leave the rest of the immobile tooth. This horse did have a mouth that was not one to be proud about, however he is definitely more comfortable and has a lot more grind back after a ventral curvature reduction. We will be going back out to check on him Thursday.
