Jackson update 🐾

Jackson update 🐾 Jackson was found in this condition by our animal control and what was originally thought to be chemical burns is actually called “puppy strangles,” a rare disease where the immune system attacks the skin on the face, resulting in a secondary infection. We cannot thank Dr. Merayo and his staff enough for the care they have given this sweet boy! He has melted a lot of hearts. Jackson’s condition will require steroids the rest of his life and antibiotics to resolve. Without these meds, and in the condition in which he was found and where he was found-his chances of survival were slim. We would like to thank every single person who donated for this little boy’s medical care!!!! SO MANY OF YOU. Jackson is now in private foster care where he is being treated and will continue to heal. Thank you for not skipping a beat to help us save him. We have 5 little reindeer ready for homes. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And these 5, sweet little babes who were left outside at our door last night are all treasures. They got a warm bath, cuddles, a check up, and are waiting for new homes! 🙏🏼 Who will show these pups what love is? ❗️Important shelter update! ❗️⬇️ (please read) ❗️Due to a distemper outbreak, the McKinley County Humane Society will be undergoing a full two-week quarantine. ➡️ During this time, the Humane Society will NOT be doing adoptions, animals viewing and accepting any surrendered animals 🔺Distemper is a very serious disease that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous system of adult's dogs and puppies. 🔺It is very contagious and transferred through airborne exposure from an infected dog or wild animal. All dogs and puppies are susceptible to the disease but puppies four mouths and younger as well as unvaccinated adult dogs are at a higher risk. 🔺To help prevent the exposure of distemper and to maintain your animal's safety we request: Vaccinate your dogs/puppies. Puppies must receive 4 vaccinations in 2 week increments and dogs must have their vaccinations done annually. 🔺Avoid any public areas if your animal is not fully vaccinated. 🔺Spay/Neuter your animals to help decrease the number of unvaccinated/overpopulated animals in our area. ❗️Mckinley County Humane Society will NOT be accepting surrendered animals during the quarantine. 🚨Any dogs/puppies that are found at the shelter abandoned will have to be euthanized due to the outbreak. ❗️If it's an emergency or injured animal, please call Animal Protection during business hours and Metro for after hours. 🔹We WILL HAVE STRAW available for your animals starting tomorrow 12/5. 🔺We cannot have any volunteers working during the quarantine. 🙏🏼Thank you all for your continued patience. We received some darling handmade ornaments for our shelter tree! We will also be hanging them on our kennels for our animals to know they are loved by so many! We want to thank Mrs. Rodriguez & Ms. Cortez kindergarten classes and also Ms. L’s first grade class at Del Norte Elementary for making these special ornaments to bring some much needed holiday cheer to our shelter tree!🎄 A special thank you Dani Cortez for organizing this! ❗️ Today, this woman arrived at our shelter with a container of puppies, & despite our intake policy posted on the door—she went on and on about how it’s awful when people do this to animals and when she was asked for her info she left the puppies and ran! 😑 This incident highlights the challenges we face daily, leading to overcrowding and the need for quarantine!!!! 😷👈🏼 🫠 Within two hours of reopening, calls for drop-offs are pouring in. Gallup, we need your help!❗️ Let's work together to find solutions for pets, rather than adding to the problem. Surrendering animals without notice strains our resources!!! We can offer temporary assistance to help you keep your pets by helping provide food and straw, but the long-term responsibility rests with you-the pet owners. We're a small shelter and we rely heavily on donations. We are doing the best we can! We get attacked daily and weekly because we have to get to a point where we post we have a Monday list but this is why. Becky was found off I-40 near Gallup where she had been for many weeks. Severely malnourished and scared.. With our shelter full we gave a plea for fosters on Facebook for our dogs, Richard in Utah stepped up to open his home to Becky. Yesterday she waited eagerly for her ride not knowing where she was going but excited to get there. And in the wee hours this morning she finally felt what it is to be loved, warm, and safe. Thank you Richard for opening your home and heart to this sweet girl. Sunday at the shelter! Thank you to McKinley County Sheriff's Office for their help today, to our volunteers, & and to Controlled Air & Metal for the forklift today! Our animals have straw for the winter and we are so grateful!♥️

Another huge thank you to every volunteer who came yesterday to help us load this generous straw donation from Galloping Goat Pumpkin Patch! That straw is on its way to Gallup this morning to the shelter where a whole new set of volunteers is waiting for us to unload into our barn for our animals! #gratitudeattitude #thankful

Transport day! 🚐

We are very grateful to the foster based rescues we work with who can help when they can to take some of our animals to give them another chance at life! 💙 We had 20 dogs (including a mama and puppies) leave today for Utah! Each transport costs us $400-$500 to get these animals to these rescues! ⬅️ This may seem like a lot of dogs but our shelter is constantly full of intakes and strays so we rely on every foster and transport we can get to help save as many as we can! Fostering saves many lives!
