Jerry Dwyer and his famous dog team, a combination which operated between Big Creek and Florence Lake from 1920 to 1927. Dwyer and his team of Alaskan sled dogs were familiar sights to another group of doughty and hard-as-nails mountaineers, the stream gaugers. From 1920 to 1925 there was 20 of these rugged individuals living in primitive camps throughout the San Joaquin River drainage area, challenging weather, terrain and the general handicaps of isolation.

Long Live the King!

2025 is the 125th anniversary year of the Airedale Terrier Club. In the February AKC Gazette, arriving in your in-box on Monday, breed columnist Nancy A. Nykamp assures us that “the Gazette Airedale articles for 2025 will showcase our breed’s many strengths and its role as a versatile worker and companion; from herding and hunting to guarding to serving as therapy dogs and family companions.

“Expect to read about the Airedale’s unique capabilities and significant accomplishments while competing in agility trials and Hunter Retriever tests, assisting as service dogs, and thriving in everyday family life.”

Congratulations to the Airedale Terrier Club, an AKC mainstay since 1900.

Ivan Grimshaw was born in Shipley, Yorkshire in 1900. When he was still a boy, his father accepted a position in Akron, Ohio with one of the large American rubber companies. The family rode the train to Liverpool from Shipley, sailed to Boston on the Cunard Liner Ivernia, and traveled by train to Cleveland, eventually arriving in Akron. Ivan and his parents lived there until he left for college. In 1931, Ivan authored “When I Was a Boy in England” as one in a series of books entitled “Children of Other Lands Books.” Ivan’s book appears to be directed to a juvenile audience.

Man stands in front of a Moon roadster while a woman sits in the driver's seat, and a dog sits on the running board. The car was for sale from Robert G. Maynard at 1026 East Colorado. A sign in the store window behind the car announces that Joe's Transfers will be moving into those rooms on November 1st.

Moon Motor Car Company (1905 – 1930) was an American automobile company that was located in St. Louis, Missouri. The company had a venerable reputation among the buying public, as it was known for fully assembled, easily affordable mid-level cars using high-quality parts. Often this meant the manufacturing process required more human intervention, leading to operating losses. The company was founded by carriage maker Joseph W. Moon. Moon produced both cars and trucks.
