I just finished up the last 15 horses of 2024!!! What a way to end the year! I want to thank everyone of you who allow me to work on your horses feet and for all of you who send horses for us to train. I really do appreciate the business. I really do have a great group of people to work for. I've been my living with the horse for over 30 years, and as I close out another year I'm full of thankfulness for the many blessings. For me horses and life go hand and hand. One enhances the other, and sometimes one sheds light on, or exposes something in the other. I'm not much of a surface guy, I like to look a little deeper because it generally exposes the truth.

While helping someone with their horse yesterday I asked them what they were looking for to know the horse was ready to ride. They said obedience. And the horse was being very obedient. It looked obedient to the passer bye, but I wasn't buying it. I said ask more of the horse, and she did, and that's when how the horse really felt came out. See for me when it comes to horses obedience, that is just where we start. It doesn't mean loyalty or trust, or love. Obedience is just doing what we think is expected, or what it is that can check a box and we can say, "see I did it". For me I looked for a change in the horses mind, or in its heart. When the horse exposes itself and shows you its changed its mind or heart, the real magic happens. I showed her what to do to gain trust and show the horse something better. It was clear the horse had crossed over from being obedient to understanding, willingness and desire. And they progressed and had a wonderful ride, together and being real.

Ok, that also got me seeing the crossover into life. Maybe it's us or maybe we know someone who on the surface seem so kind, or maybe someone full of love. But as you look deeper you realize it's not true. It's checking a box. The outward appearance, or how they are perceived is so important to them. But what about when it gets personal? Just like when we ask the horse for a little more? Thats when you see where the heart is. When it's real, what you see on the outside matches what's on the inside. Now everyone fails at this in the heat of the moment, but it's what's in the heart when nobody is looking that matters. Or when you are interacting out of the publics eye.

Horses fail, friendships fail, relationships fail and relationship with Jesus fails because what we portray and where our hearts are don't line up. That's ok, if we realize we are working on it, like I said we all fall short. But we need to ask ourselves, is my heart the same heart I want people to see? Being obedient to God doesn't mean that's where our hearts truly are, but its a good start.

People walking down the street will see what you want them to see. Just like that girl saw what that horse was showing. And it's easy to get tricked into thinking it's sincere or real. But when put to the test or pushed a little, it truly exposes where the horses mind and heart is, and where a person's mind and heart is. That's how I see it anyway.

This is what's on my mind today.

Life is short, but it can at times seem very long.

Anyone else think that? You know in the scheme of things we are only here a very short time. So why can it at times seem like it is so long? I suppose there's lots of reasons, but what's on my mind today is purpose. Either knowing what your purpose is or not knowing.

We all have a purpose don't you think? It's finding it that's the problem. When you don't have purpose life can just drag on can't it? I believe that's because without purpose we're just existing, we're not living.
Don't be discouraged, purpose comes in all shapes and sizes. We don't have to make up our purpose, our purpose will make us..if we let it.

I have went through a good portion of my life trying to figure out what my purpose is. I knew I had it, I just didn't Know what it was. But I'm slowly starting to figure it out. Sometimes you feel like you know what your purpose is but the hard part is being afraid or not having the confidence to do it.

When we are living with purpose life can sometimes fly by. But you get to enjoy it. When living with purpose it helps keep you focused on the good and not dwell on the bad. Because with purpose there's still going to be bad. But without purpose the bad is what you dwell on.

I had a horse come into training one time. It had been to a few trainers before it got to me. It had alot of problems. Nobody could seem to help it. After working with it a few days I realized what it needed was a job. I remember someone saying, "I wouldn't take it to do that, it's not safe". But I went ahead and gave it a job. In less than an hour this was a completely different horse. And he stayed that way. I actually bought that horse and he was one of the best I ever had. So why did he change? Because I gave him a purpose. His problem was he had been forced into the grind of training without having a purpose. All he could focus on was the bad, his life was miserable. But once he found his purpose he actually enjoyed life. He didn't just enjoy life he excelled. Maybe you can relate to that horse, I know I can.

Today while riding a training horse I felt it being a little heavy on my hand. This filly doesn't have alot of rides so its just figuring it out. And I had to think for a second, when things get heavy or hard we tend to pull back, maybe fight it, or show it we are stronger. But softness is on my mind. I want that filly to feel my hand and want to go with me, not resist me. Actually thats what I want in life too, but thats just a side note.

So I did a couple of things to help this horse. As it got heavy I put some pressure on the side it was pulling to(not from). And when it softened into my hand the pressure was gone. I had to do this a few times but in no time, when the filly felt my hand it softly went with me. After that the lightest touch got a positive response and softness.

So I guess we need to remember that in horses and life we are going to run across resistance, heck sometimes we are the resistance. But often there is a reason. Confusion, lack of understanding, lack of trust, attitude the list can go on and on for why, but the important part is how we fix it.

Isnt that true about everything? We can come up with reasons for problems, but its crickets when we start talking about solutions. Shoot, that might mean we have to change something.. I want this horse to want to soften to me, not just give in from force. There is a difference when someone/something chooses to do something and when they reluctantly do it. I could write a whole book on this subject.

Anyway, when I stepped off this horse I could see the acceptance in its eye. Honestly the look that filly gave me when I was done makes it all worth it.

And one last thing, when I am the resistance, I am trying to learn from it, maybe our resistance comes from a past experience. Maybe the current situation really does have our best interests at heart, maybe whatever or whoever we are around is waiting for us to soften. Just a thought about life and horses, hopefully this makes us all think a little.

Well friends, this is what's on my mind this morning.

Growth, or good things come after the storm. Sometimes this Growth or the good things don't come immediately, sometimes the storm brings immediate hardships or hurt or anxiety. But with time, Growth or maybe blessings will come.

Lately we have been extremely dry, our land desperately needed rain. We prayed for rain, we prayed for a change in the weather. But when the rain came, it didn't just rain, it came as a storm with high winds. Sometimes it takes a storm or hardship to produce a change or provide growth. Sometimes it's hard to see them in pain or hardships.

Its fall right now, the rain we got isnt going to produce immediate growth. All it produces now is mud, that's another hardship sometimes. Sometimes we're not thankful for what we asked for or for what we need because we don't like the way it came.

It's going to be months before we see the green grass this rain will provide. Right now we're going to pick up the pieces that got blown down or around in the storm, and in the spring we'll understand the blessings of the rain and witness the growth that followed the storm, even though it wasn't immediate. There usually are some immediate benefits if we look around though. The storm put water in a pond we just had built. That my friends is a huge blessing.

I've had storms in my life, things have gotten turned around, and things have gotten destroyed, and I'm not talking about weather storms, I'm talking about life storms. And the storms brought change, and pain, and confusion, and doubt, and sadness. After the storms there was rebuilding, and often that's uncomfortable. But after awhile you realize that the storm brought growth, maybe not immediately, but it will be there. In the meantime while you are trying to survive the storms you're in, remember your pond (your heart and soul) is being filled. You might not realize it because you aren't going back to check on it, but it's happening regardless. One day your going to wake up and your heart and soul will be full. You'll say how did that happen?? Its because God was delivering the rain the entire time. We just couldn't see it for the storm.

Friends, God doesn't cause our storms. But he does help us turn them into growth and blessings if we will let him.

Training tip Tuesday.

I want to talk about transitions for a second. A transition is moving from one thing to the next right? I could go on and on about transitions but I want to talk about the most basic and most overlooked transition. The transition from information, knowledge and desire to going out and applying it. I know it seems basic but not a day goes by that I dont see or hear of peoples knowledge and desires but the transition to action doesn't happen. Sometimes it's because of time, sometimes lack of confidence, but regardless, action doesn't happen.

So my tip for today is to take your desire or your knowledge and make a transition to application, even if it's small. The more you transition from knowledge to action the more your confidence will grow and the better your horse will get.

Showing you one of the ways I help a horse that has some holes in its foundation. Often we only know techniques, but not the parts that are important. A technique is supposed to be used to get to the horses mind, otherwise its just exercise.

This is C**t learning. Honestly I help a lot of people who struggle with this. This lets you see it happening. C**t hasnt done this with a c**t before, only older broke horses. There's no shame in learning or in beginning. Sometimes we make things look easy, but thats because of lots of practice and mistakes.
