I have been listening to this audiobook over and over again, and I wanted to share it with you all here because I feel that the essays cover a large variety of questions that we ask ourselves as leaders and as human beings.. the author also wrote the best seller “The Mountain is You" which is a fantastic listen as well, probably my favorite book so far this year.
if you already have a Spotify premium account, these titles are included in your membership.
anyway, I found the material impactful and hope that you do too!

Applying the marketing imperatives to a veterinary end of life service involves understanding the unique needs and preferences of pet owners during the end-of-life journey of their beloved pets. Here's how you can apply each imperative:

1. Understand customer needs and wants: Conduct market research to understand the emotional and practical needs of pet owners during the hospice phase. This may include understanding their concerns, desired level of support, and preferences for end-of-life care.

2. Create customer value: Develop services that provide comfort, pain management, and emotional support for pets and their owners during this difficult time. Offer personalized care plans and compassionate staff who are trained in end-of-life care.

3. Build and manage strong brands: Create a strong brand identity that emphasizes compassion, empathy, and specialized expertise in pet hospice care. Develop a brand name, logo, and messaging that conveys trust, professionalism, and understanding.

4. Develop effective marketing strategies: Identify target markets such as pet owners who prioritize their pets' quality of life and end-of-life care. Segment customers based on factors like pet type, age, and specific end-of-life needs. Position your pet hospice business as a trustworthy and reliable option for compassionate care.

5. Build strong customer relationships: Establish trust and empathy by providing transparent and honest communication with pet owners. Offer support services like grief counseling and resources for coping with pet loss. Engage with pet owners through newsletters, social media, and in-person events to build lasting relationships.

6. Embrace technology and innovation: Leverage technology to enhance the customer experience. Utilize online platforms for appointment scheduling, telemedicine consultations, and educational resources. Stay updated on industry trends and incorporate innovative approaches to end-of-life care, such as alternative therapies or advanced pain management techniques.

Remember to adapt these imperatives to the specific needs of your pet hospice business and continually assess and refine your marketing strategies based on feedback from customers and changes in the market.

Just a few words of why......A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience.

He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.

He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!

A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000.

"What?!" said the owner.

"You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."

The answer is simple:

Tap with a hammer: $2

Know where to knock and how much to knock: $19,998

The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience...because those are the results of struggles, experiments and even tears.

If I do a job in 30 minutes it's because I spent 20 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes.

Co-Founder

Dr. Rotman believes that many of the things that took years for her to learn on her own as a business owner, are easy to succinctly convey to other practice owners who are on a similar path. Having previously owned a successful primary care veterinary practice, she experienced the daily needs of a busy day practice and owning a business and a building. She successfully sold her practice and started her own in-home euthanasia business and aftercare transport, allowing her to work closely with a high-volume crematory. While running and growing her multi-doctor practice, she became aware of the paper trail most pet crematories were using to track their pet cremations. She successfully sold her mobile euthanasia practice and co-founded Beloved Pet Software, a pet cremation tracking software. After the release of the software, and having been volunteering with the IAAHPC business groups, she became aware of a new way of helping her colleagues to address the many end of life care business questions they were having. Thus she co-founded VetSpark Business Consulting.

Co-Founder

An entrepreneur at heart, Dr. Christie Cornelius graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University in 2004. She founded Last Wishes, an in-home pet hospice and euthanasia service in Houston, in 2012. The following year, Dr. Cornelius founded The Fair Winds Fund, a 501c non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to families needing end-of-life care for their ailing pets.

In 2017, Dr. Cornelius became one of the first veterinarians in the world to become certified as a hospice and palliative care veterinarian through the International Association for Animal Hospice & Palliative Care. That same year, she opened the first pet hospice center and pet aquamation service in Texas and re-branded her company to Senior Paws. Dr. Cornelius grew Senior Paws into a large interdisciplinary team of over twenty highly skilled veterinary professionals working to improve service and outcomes for pets and their caregiving families.

In 2021, Dr. Cornelius and two other pet hospice companies on the west coast partnered with BluePearl Veterinary Specialists to form the start of BluePearl Pet Hospice to expand the reach of pet hospice to other communities nationally and internationally. After staying on as a medical director for a year to assist with the transition, Dr. Cornelius left her role at BluePearl to further her business education in an MBA program at Rice University. She moved to Galveston in April of 2022, where she currently resides with her partner, three dogs, four cats, and three backyard hens.
