Happy new week, everyone!

We might not know what you all have on your schedules for the next several days, but what we do know is that YOU HAVE GOT THIS. You are smart and capable, and we have no doubt you're going to do great thingsโ€”even if the great things this time around are simply "getting out of bed" and "making it through the day." When life is challenging these tasks alone can be significant accomplishments and we recognize these efforts, too. Because in case you didn't know it, no matter what you absolutely ARE as amazing as your dog thinks you are! Just trust us on this. ๐”ป๐• ๐•˜๐•ค ๐•œ๐•Ÿ๐• ๐•จ ๐•ค๐•ฅ๐•ฆ๐•—๐•—. Who are we to argue?

Our Long Beach clinic will be open tomorrow for business as usual, and we look forward to seeing you and your fur babies soon! And we welcome you to hang around our socials for things like fun, behind-the-scenes looks at clinic life and updates on our Feral Fridays program.

Have a great week, everyone!

Hi to everyone from the always lovely Isabella! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ’œ April's Employee of the Month can be seen here at the front desk where she welcomes pets and assists clients. We are so lucky to be able to do what we love, every day, for communities we're so proud to be a part of. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Congratulations to our May Employee of the Month, the indispensable and much-adored Kim! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

Kim started out as a receptionist at our Garden Grove clinic just over a year ago where she was an important, bright, and cheerful first point of contact for our clients. But her eagerness to learn paired with her enthusiasm for helping out wherever sheโ€™s needed most resulted in her quick move into a kennel attendant position in our Long Beach clinic and now into her latest role as our newest vaccine assistant! (Weโ€™ll just be over here trying to keep up with you, Kim!) Admired by her colleagues as an unselfish team player who's always ready to work, Kim brings positivity, fun, and laughter to her duties at Golden State Humane Society. She has three cats and one dog of her ownโ€”Mango ๐Ÿฑ, Copper ๐Ÿฑ, Kitty ๐Ÿฑ, and Cookie ๐Ÿถโ€”and when sheโ€™s not at home loving on them, she's at Golden State Humane Society happily loving on all of our wonderful fur-baby clients. ๐Ÿ’“

Congratulations again, Kim! We are extremely proud of you and endlessly thankful to have you as such an important part of our clinic family!! ๐Ÿ†โญ๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ†โญ๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ†โญ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Itโ€™s National Kids and Pets Day!!

OR IS IT? Weโ€™re not really sure, to be totally honest, because we've been seeing conflicting information as to whether this is celebrated on todayโ€™s date or one that was two days ago. But then we remembered that pretty much every day around these parts is a perfect day to celebrate kids and their pets (or pets and their kids!?), so it is ALL GOOD.

Pets teach our children love and compassion, friendship and teamwork, and respect and responsibility. They are their most loyal friends and constant companions in fun and silliness and shenanigans and adventures. They are the keepers of their childrenโ€™s secrets and dreams and the co-creators of what will be some of their children's happiest memoriesโ€”the kind that will stay with them for rest of their lives. If these arenโ€™t things worthy of a little (confusing) online celebration, we have no idea what would be.

Do your kids have a pet bestie? If they donโ€™t, are you thinking of expanding your family at some point with a new kitteh or doggo sibling for them? In case you are, we think today (and, well, also every day) is the perfect time to remind everyone how many absolutely wonderful animalsโ€”including the one who is the perfect fit for your familyโ€”are waiting at the local animal shelter to be adopted into their forever homes. Adventures and shenanigans and a whole lot of love await! ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ๐Ÿฑ

While weโ€™ve been talking this week about the importance of microchipping your pets, we want to remind everyone that the presence of a microchip does not negate the importance of making sure your furry loves are wearing properly fitted collars with identification tags that include up-to-date contact phone numbers. Tags are the first line of defense when your dog or cat gets lost and still the fastest way for people to help your fur baby reunite with you. ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑโ˜Ž๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’•

Happy Hump Day, GSHS family! You have arrived at the midpoint of your week! Today weโ€™re continuing our celebration of National Pet ID Week and intersecting it with a little to tell you all the story of a gorgeous, lost, and loved puppers. We hope youโ€™ll read on! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Back in November of 2016, this beautiful girl, Daisy, was tragically separated from her family in Wilmington. In March of 2017 she managed to find her way to compassionate people in Compton who brought her into our Long Beach clinic for some medical care and TLC. (You all know we excel at both of these things, yes??) When we found out she was a stray, we scanned her for a microchip and discovered that yes, she did have one. Because she was microchipped and because her family immediately reported her missing and made sure her microchip registry info was up to date, we were able to joyfully reunite them after months of separation!

Microchips definitely save lives, heal families, and repair broken heartsโ€”pretty impressive work for something the size of a grain of rice. Have you had your furry family member(s) chipped yet? Golden State Humane Society is proud to offer microchipping services, so please stop in and see us if you need a microchip for any of your furry loves!!

Itโ€™s the start of another new week, and we want to wish you all a very happy Monday! (Seriously, though: Where do the weekends disappear to so quickly? WE DEMAND ANSWERS.)

Anyway: Did you all know this particular week is National Pet ID Week?

And did you also know that Golden State Humane Society proudly offers microchipping services that can identify your pets and help them safely find their way home to you should they ever get lost?? (One of our very worst nightmares as pet parents.)

A microchip is just what it sounds like: a Itโ€™s enclosed in a glass cylinder about the size of a grain of rice thatโ€™s implanted under your petโ€™s skin using a hypodermic needle. When scanned, itโ€™s activated to display identifying information about your dog or cat that has been previously stored in an accompanying registry. By microchipping your pets, you're giving them the best possible chance to get back home to their furever family should they accidentally get separated from you. Please stop by the clinic during our operating hours to provide your fur babies with this very simple yet endlessly important service. (And feel free to call us with any questions!) The actual insertion of the microchip takes less than a minute and could one day be the reason your best friend doesn't end up lost from you forever.

Before you trap, review our feral cat policy at goldenstatehumanesociety.org/feral-policy. Golden State Humane Society defines a feral cat as un-socialized, untouchable, fearful of humans, and un-adoptable. Our FERAL FRIDAYS program focuses on the most vulnerable cats in our communities and caregivers who otherwise cannot afford to spay & neuter them. Socialized cats will not be accepted.

FERAL FRIDAYS events are held at our Long Beach location only and open to feral cats all over Southern California.

Happy Friday, everyone! You made it through the week! Today we continue our Feral-Fridays-themed posts by talking about the differences between a stray cat and a feral cat. We hope you'll read on! โฌ‡๏ธ ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

Stray cats have experienced socialization with humans at some point in their lives and may be lost or, even worse, abandoned. They may be curious about us, approach us with their tails up or out, and even allow us to touch and pet them. They tend to vocalize, knowing from experience how to communicate with humans, and they're often eager for us to take them in as new family members. Sometimes stray cats may appear less approachable the longer they live unhoused and away from people, but they can join loving, human families again under the right circumstances.

Feral cats, in contrast, have never been socialized to humans, and they'll run away like wild animals if approached. They won't vocalize with us and may hiss and attack if cornered or trapped, sometimes injuring themselves during their attempts to escape. Feral cats are not likely to ever want to live with humans and are most at risk for violence and disease, often losing their lives at very young ages. Feral kittens, however, can become socialized and placed into the safety of forever homes if caught when they're still under four weeks old.

Golden State Humane Societyโ€™s Feral Fridays program focuses on those feral cats most in perilโ€”those most likely to reproduce and continue the cycle of neglect, disease, starvation, poisoning, predation, accidents, and abuse at the hands of humans. Rescues and caregivers can provide food and some shelter for feral cats, but they can never truly โ€œsaveโ€ them. What we all CAN do is prevent the next generation from ever being born into so much suffering.

Please help us raise funds for our next free spay and neuter Feral Fridays event by donating today at goldenstatehumanesociety.org/feral-Fridays. Together we can end the plight of feral cats in our communities! Thank you so much from all of us here at Golden State Humane Society for stepping up for these most vulnerable beings who so urgently need our help.

Today is * and we dedicate this post with love to all of the four-legged and two-legged and extra-special tripod animal besties we share our lives and our homes with. So, to all of our babies with brown or green or blue or yellow or hazel pretty peepers and, of course, also to our winky, one-eyed wonders, ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ. To our slobber bombers and our fart flingers and our super-boss belchers, we stand in endless awe of your skills. To our chonky champs and our skinny sweeties, and to our social superstars and our shyer and more anxious fur-kids, we will always love you just as you are. To our current animal besties and to the ones weโ€™ve loved and lost due to illness or time, we constantly carry you with us in our hearts. To our biggest fans on all of our days and our greatest sources of comfort on our worst, we don't know what we'd do without your support. To our favorite non-human comedians, confidants, teachers and family, to the ones we adopted and the ones who adopted us, THANK YOU. We are better humans because you love us and let us love you.

Todayโ€™s Feral Friday post is the story of a very special old tomcat. Please note we've included only one photo here since the additional images are more graphic. If his story compels you to see the rest, they can be found on our IG page, tucked within the photo carousel. A link will be included in the comments.

We hope you will read on! โฌ‡๏ธ

A feral cat's life is harsh and unforgiving, and we often intake injured cats through our free spay and neuter program, Feral Fridays. Sadly, they sometimes arrive so broken we canโ€™t perform their surgeries, and euthanasia turns out to be a more humane option than returning them to the streets to suffer and die alone. Rum Tum Tugger, an elderly tomcat, was one such feral facing an uncertain future when he came into our program.

He first appeared in a well-looked-after feral cat colony in Orange County, California. His fear of humans was palpable, and he would immediately run away at the sight of the colony caregivers. Named after a T.S. Eliot feline character who always did exactly what he wanted, battle-worn Rum Tum Tugger was a challenge to catch for neuter surgery, managing to evade capture for weeks. But after much persistence from tireless colony caregivers he was finally trapped, and when they were able to take a closer look at him, their hearts shattered.

Like most tomcats, Rum Tum Tugger was a fighter who often engaged in scuffles among the existing colony. His years spent battling to survive were literally apparent all over his face as he arrived at our Petco Love-sponsored Feral Fridays event with a massive, infected wound beneath his left ear extending most of the way to his jaw. His devastated caregivers understood his chances of survival were slim, but nevertheless our veterinary staff was able to work on Rum Tum Tuggerโ€™s neuter surgery, also cleaning and abrading his wounds and safeguarding his body with antibiotics in the hope we could give this long-struggling being a chance to recover. As he began to wake up from the anesthetic after surgery, our staff did for him what we do for all our patients to optimize respiration, trying to diligently posture him in an ideal stretched-out, heads-up position. But Rum Tum Tugger, perhaps instinctively protecting his wounds, refused to move out of a tight ball, keeping his damaged face buried in the center of his body.

Once they were able to get him home, his caregivers waited for Rum Tum Tugger to let them know when he was ready to be released back into his colony. Seeming to understand he was safe, he chose to stay in his trap for several days, allowing his wounds to stabilize and even warily accepting food and water. But when he was finally ready to leave, he shot out of that trap and disappeared for days, increasingly worrying his caregivers he might not ever return. But nearly a week after his release and as a huge relief to everyone involved in his care, Rum Tum Tugger returned to feed, his wounds clearly healing well. Now neutered, his fighting days should be behind him, and his life should be calmer and safer.

Though he has no idea of it, of course, Rum Tum Tuggerโ€™s hard-fought existence and against-all-odds recovery has made him the perfect ambassador for our Feral Fridays program as his story serves to educate everyone it touches on the plight of feral cats in our communities and the urgent need to end their future populations through spay and neutering. Millions of feral cats live in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, with females who can get pregnant as early as four months old and again as soon as two months after theyโ€™ve given birth. Imagine how many unwanted cats and how many other stories just like Rum Tum Tuggerโ€™s this amounts to. Most feral cats, if not all, will be born into lives of intense suffering, and many will die shortly after birth from harsh conditions, predators, or human cruelty. Those who live longer, like Rum Tum Tugger, must fight every single day just to survive. Golden State Humane Societyโ€™s Feral Fridays program aims to continue to help countless other feral cats just like him until, one day in the future, long-suffering beings like Rum Tum Tugger will exist only in our memories.

Congratulations to our April Employee of the Month, the lovely and much-loved Isabella!

Isabella has been with Golden State Humane Society since June of 2020, which means she began her work here during one of the busiest times in veterinary services history, and right away we had no idea what we would have done without her! A favorite of both clients and staff members, you will usually find always-smiling Isabella working in vaccine client services, although her willingness to help wherever she is needed means you can often find her working in main client services as well. She has five fur babies of her ownโ€”two dogs and three catsโ€”and enjoys spending her time at the clinic loving on all of your babies, too.

Congratulations, Isabella, and thank you for the invaluable support and kindness you always provide to our animal clients and their humans (and to all of us!). We appreciate your hard work and are so grateful youโ€™re a part of our team!

Today is National Siamese Cat Day which is, of course, the ๐•ก๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•ฃ๐•ฃ๐•ฃ๐•ฃ๐•—๐•–๐•”๐•ฅ time (yep, we said it) for all you Meezer families out there to give your gorgeous blue-eyed babies an extra-huge dose of love. Referred to in their native Thailand as โ€œWichien-Maat,โ€ these elegant, โ€œmoon diamondโ€ cats have been making their human companions happy for centuries. And if you so happen to be one of these very lucky humans, we hope you'll drop a pic of your Siamese cat love in the comments so we can properly ooh and ahh over your baby!
