Today's auction features this maki-e beauty depicting a two-tone momiji maple leaves motif symbolizing blessing, unity, transformation and change in life. This pen was hand-painted and generously donated by @ian.rush.bian.
The base pen is the trusty Pilot Kakuno with its signature smiley-face nib :)
It includes a converter which has been decorated in a matching style.
Ian has been a great inspiration to both myself and @urushi.notes, through both his urushi work as well as his kindness and humility as an artist.
When we were discussing how to set this pen's estimated value, Ian expressed the desire for it to bring as much support as possible for Noa without imposing any pressure or sense of undue obligation from our pen friends. He is very modest and admitted that he is often told he underprices his work.
For comparison, decorated Kakuno's such as the "Decokakuno" series by @ericjpib, and hand-painted pens such as those by Gul @rosestudio.2019, are typically priced around $200. Maki-e converters alone typically cost an additional $25.

All proceeds will support Noa, who will be hospitalized for preconditioning chemo and total body radiation therapy this coming week in preparation for the potentially curative transplant.

It has been a treat to watch them grow over the years, with several very fun and bold designs - from their iconic Ascher, to their use of honeycomb, jelly opal, and glow-in-the-dark materials, and much more.
This is an early rendition of their classic Westminster model, in a lovely one-off pour that evokes sunny skies reflected over tropical seas.
I've added an o-ring so the barrel can be eyedroppered for greater ink capacity.

Noa's surgery yesterday was successful, although we heard that it was more challenging than anticipated. The next milestone is for her to get a whole body scan to find the targets for the total body radiation therapy. That was supposed to happen this morning, but there was an unexpected mishap and it had to be rescheduled. Hopefully everything will go smoothly next time. Many of you remember when Noa's leukemia relapsed last summer after 1.5 years of chemo, and how we began to fear for her life when she was sick with bacteremia and severe mucositis during the first month of reinduction therapy. Then, just before last Thanksgiving we were very dismayed to find that she did not respond after the third grueling cycle of salvage therapy, and were told that bone marrow transplant would not be curative unless she is in complete remission first. She was fast-tracked to CAR-T cell therapy, which has a high risk of serious side effects. Yet she has pulled through, time and time again.
This pen commemorates the resilience she has shown in the face of overwhelming odds, as well as the strength that comes from the encouragement and support received from all of you throughout this journey. Thanks to you, she and her family do not have to be alone even as she walks through the valley of the shadow of death.

This gorgeous piece was meticulously hand-lacquered with raden and opal inlay by my dear friend Sophia @urushi.notes, and generously donated so that 100% of the pen's final sale price will help Noa and her family through cancer treatment.
The pen base is the classic Pilot Custom 74 with a 14k gold C (coarse nib), which has been upgraded to a naginata grind by CY from @tokyostationpens. It also comes with a deluxe plush pen sleeve which was hand sewn by Sophia herself.
Sophia recently completed a collaboration with Muze Pens which sold out almost instantly, and has since received so many requests for custom work that she is currently closed for commissions. This is your chance to get one of her early works, imbued with all the passion and heart of an emerging artist who will be making waves in the pen world for years to come. Brad just launched two new vintage-styled models, the minimal VS1 and the lovely tapered VS2 with a clip.
He kindly agreed to offer a very limited number of pens here through @cambriapens, which are now available for preorder with estimated delivery in March.
Profits from the sales will be split between Noa, 3 year old battling very high risk leukemia, and Athena, @pensloth and @randomly_._rachel 's cat who's started treatment for feline infectious peritonitis, allocated based on the giver's preference and most urgent need. If additional proceeds remain beyond what is needed, they will be reinvested into further initiatives. Our dream is to grow the impact of #pensforhope this year, among the international fountain pen community and beyond!
Options include silver, green, blue or red lizardskin (reminiscent of the legendary Parker Golden Web material!), as well as a Tibaldi Impero-esque silver/blue vintage celluloid. Other vintage barrel materials pictured above may also be available upon request.

I've been admiring this VS1 sample ever since I first received it. The pearlescent material is stunningly chatoyant and perfectly accents the highly sought after vintage lizardskin barrel. It's beautifully shaped and polished, and uncaps as smoothly as silk in under 1.5 turns.
Vintage celluloid is a major highlight of these incredibly svelte pens, and there is very limited supply of each color as shown. Cambria Virtual Pen Show: Day 7
Circling back to an old favorite, here's the overdue demo of the Marxton Oversized Jade Flat Top I promised 🙂
This Marxton may be cosmetically imperfect, but it's equipped with a tremendously fun Warranted #8 nib. Perfectly balanced between a superflexy and wet noodle in snapback, it responds best to a very light touch and yet may be controlled with precision when you get the ideal angle.
The tipping has more feedback than the typical Waterman Ideal nib, and also offers an unusual architect shape which is excellent for fine hairlines when flexing at a low angle, and broader cross strokes when held at a higher 45 degree angle. The reverse is also unusually smooth and razor thin. It inspires me to want to build up my confidence to draw more - this pen would be the perfect companion for delicate and expressive line work alike.

In brief, Sailor nibs are typically friction fit, so the important thing is to grasp firmly so the nib doesn't twist or shift against the feed as you pull. Same thing when you put it back, except you also want to check to be doubly sure the nib sits correctly on the feed and the entire thing goes back in the right orientation before trying to push it back in. The tines are very thin and very soft, so any adjustments (if necessary) should be made by removing the entire assembly and reinserting it as a whole.
I would not recommend this for most to do at home, but for those of you who are determined to try, hope this visual demo helps!
