This beautiful cherry La Reina just laid two eggs. She’s been a very inconsistent egg layer, it’s just under two years since she last laid (unless she snuck some by me). The eggs look great, so here’s hoping for fertility 🤞 Hopefully my patience will pay off.

I am heartbroken by the loss of this beautiful gentle giant 😔 Tawni only lived here for just over 3 months but even in that short time I became really attached to her. I was looking forward to spring and getting her back outside into the sun 😔

Tawni (Tony) was rehomed to me at the end of October. She really seemed to be doing well, but moving to a new home can always be stressful for tortoises. Everything seemed perfect until the last 2 to 3 weeks. We also had a terrible cold snap here during that time so I think that didn’t help with her system already seemingly compromised.

She was at the vet yesterday and actually passed away there at the vet office, even they were shocked she took such a turn in a matter of hours 😔 They did an x-ray out of curiosity and she had 18 eggs, they looked good and didn’t seem to be the main problem, but just the toll egg production can take on their body along with whatever she was fighting must’ve been too much 😢

It’s really hard losing any tortoises, but losing this big girl so suddenly really hit me hard. Tortoises can hide illness so well and hardly show any symptoms until it’s pretty much too late. If you ever see any worrying signs with tortoises really don’t hesitate to get them to the vet, by time they’re showing signs it’s already bad. I miss her so much already and I wish more could’ve been done to save her 😢

Finally, the weather has warmed back up a bit, and these babies are headed to their new homes ❤️✈️💛
