Two babies with very different origin stories. Both of these babies hatched in March, but the one on the right hatched teeny tiny, and took months to absorb it’s umbilicus. That is very abnormal so I was very worried for the baby but kept working with it and kept it safe in a brooder box until eventually everything resolved.

The baby on the left hatched gigantic from a massive egg, and funny enough that baby didn’t even pip. It literally just hulked out of the egg and cracked the entire thing all around.

Tortoises all grow at their own pace, so without the hatch date and background info it can be near impossible to take accurate guesses at the age. So many factors can affect how they grow, including genetics, egg size, how they hatched, and overall husbandry. These babies are the same age but are 118 grams apart. Redfoots are so diverse and there’s always something interesting ❤️

Genetics is the main determining factor for how intense / vibrant a Cherryhead can get, but a good diet will help draw out every bit of potential color 🔥🔥 The first picture (top) is when Khaleesi first came to live here in 2022 vs today (bottom).

It’s going to be another hot one over 100° today (heat index of 108!). I try to take a few moments to spray the tortoises down here and there to give them some relief. Thankfully they have lots of shade too.

Believe it or not, this little leopard is a year old. Only 37 grams!! For some reason this little sweetie will not grow but otherwise seems completely healthy, firm plastron, eats great etc. This is why I never let a young leopard go until I’ve seen good growth over several months. I feel doing otherwise would be doing a disservice to the new owner and the little tortoise. Getting them well started makes a difference! If they went to new homes too soon, I would never know which ones may have issues or need additional help.

Hopefully this little baby will end up growing and thriving. This is the first one out of hundreds to have this issue. For now he has a home here 💛

Young Kaida finally laid her eggs today, a full 11 days later. She drove me a little crazy with ghost nesting + digging then quitting but she finally did it. As long as a mama is still showing a normal appetite I don’t worry. I never want to intervene unnecessarily. She laid 3 eggs, not a bad start for her first ever clutch ❤️

I was reviewing my cameras and spotted a cherryhead girl was digging yesterday. The ground is soooooo hard and dry here so they don’t have much luck nesting outside this time of year.

The camera view was from pretty far away but I was able to sleuth out that it was young Kaida. I picked her up and you can even feel / see the eggs that are ready to be laid. She’s now been moved into the shed where there is soft dirt and privacy to lay in peace ❤️

Big surprise tonight while filling up water bowls! My first ground hatched babies! Or technically, ‘shed hatched’ lol.

These babies were likely laid in February and incubated in the northern redfoot house. I am scanning my cameras now to see where they came up. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for more!

They came from the Northern girls pen so I know they are half cherry head since the only males I ever have with them are cherry heads. Super tough cuties! From the look of their almost completely healed umbilicus they hatched within the last week or two.

Seraphina just laid a small clutch, hoping these are fertile and some baby hypos hatch 🤞🧡 Seraphina didn’t lay a single egg last year which was very surprising because the year prior she laid a ton, but none of those first year eggs were fertile. Here’s hoping this is her year!

I was there to grab her eggs right away and good thing because one of the other cherryheads was trying to eat one when I first stumbled on the scene. They can be little savages at times.
