It never gets old shooting birds over a finished dog! Many claim to have a finished dog but very few are actually finished in the true meaning of the word. We have had several people over the last few weeks contact us in regards that we started training in partnership with another kennel at another location. Rest assured, we are not operating in conjunction or affiliated with any other kennel. It never was or has been discussed or a option. Pure rumor and I wanted to clarify we are still here by Garland and don't have any plans on going anywhere or partnering with anyone, nothing has changed. Pointing breed puppies..... Pointing..... Working on natural steadiness...... First live birds/introductions..... Discussion time...... I often see videos from owners and trainers of puppies first live birds and introductions. Many of them show the pup being allowed to run down and catch a bird, being a wing locked pigeon, quail, chukar or whatever. I have to ask why you would want to allow the pup to catch birds right of the start? I know there are exceptions when needing to build drive and desire but generally speaking and why the first contacts with birds before you even know if you need to build drive and desire? Why this might work for flushing breeds, I think it is the exact opposite that you would want to do with pointing breeds. Allowing the dog to catch the bird then praising it when it brings it to you is just reinforcing what you don't want a pointing dog to do, or I should say reinforcing it in the wrong order. Often Creating a dog wanting to jump in and catch/put up birds versus stopping and pointing them. Some breeds can handle this but many can be dramatically set back being allowed to catch. Then having the headache down the road of having to fix a dog of jumping point or in some cases not wanting to point but catch. The pup in the video is just over 6 months old. He was allowed to see birds, chase birds and point birds with his nose and not his eyes, in that order before ever getting one in his mouth. No wings on a string or fishing pole, just birds, repetition and not saying a word to him. Why get the cart ahead of the horse? The retrieve is important but being able to trust your dog at distance to hold point is probably more important or it wont have the opportunity to retrieve. My philosophy and I know others share the same as well. Starting a pup? Don't let them catch birds you'll be much happier with the result and probably less training time in the end. The end....

This is what us dog folk say when we say completely broke or finished. Anything else is partially broke, whether it is steady to flush, shot, or steady at all, if the dog doesn't stand until the bird thumps the ground and dog is released for the retrieve, it isn't completely broke on birds. Sometimes a low flying, poor performing bird is just what the Dr ordered for gun conditioning young dogs! The best way to gun condition dogs is birds and desire to chase. We hear so many times( and get dogs in to fix) of how people go about it the wrong way, like just randomly shooting when in the field, taking the dog to the trap range ect. Those ways are the easiest way to create the huge problem of making a good dog gunshy. Don't do it! Doing it this way with birds and using prey drive has dogs excited by the shot and running to it, not from it.
