Happy Hatchday to our little old man, BeBe! He turned 19 yesterday! He's blind but chatty, arthritic but makes his way around pretty well. We often find him in Luna's cage/tent napping which means he has traversed between the two cages along the table (not flying anymore). We love him to bits and are excited to celebrate another birthday with him!

Blood feathers are scary! BeBe keeps breaking them or preening them too hard. Well, today it was a bloody mess, and we had to bathe him to clean him up. He was tired after with some warm snuggles.

Today was annual bird exams day. This is a super important part of your bird's health and an investment to say the least. I definitely went into today with some anxiety. When you have older birds (ie. 12+ years for lovebirds), there can be some fear.

Today, we confirmed BeBe's blindness. Doc says that BeBe likely can only see light and shadows and at some point it will be full totality darkness For now, though, he is doing great in all other physical aspects (we are still waiting on labs for bloodwork and f***l). We have made so many adaptations to allow BeBe as much freedom safely as possible, and he makes the journey between his and Luna's cage and back to forage and chill/nap just fine. He pans his head to see the shadows and may do more "Stevie Wonder" head movements over time to try and process the shadows he sees. We just ensure that we talk to him and gently scoop him as we move him or give him love. Lastly, to help with his arthritic pain, Dr. Burkett prescribed him some Meloxicam (pain meds). We just want to give BeBe the most comfortable and freeing last YEARS of his life. We truly believe he has more years in him even in these last golden years.

Luna is 16 years and 3 months now, but he has clear eyes and flies like a champ. His weight is lower than we like, but he's always been a small bird and he's healthy for an old guy.

Char is over 11.5 years old now. He is doing great! His weight was nearly perfect and while he has some age spots (ie. Feathers going yellow where used to be green), overall, he is strong and healthy.

Blazer, our young guy, also checked out. He's almost 4 years old now and likes to "dance" as his favorite pasttime. That's, of course, how we describe those movements to Juliette.... lol.

BeBe, unfortunately, is getting a cataract in his other eye. We still want him to have his independence (safely) and have continued to make more modifications for him to navigate between his and Luna's cage. He spends a lot of time up in Luna's tent and at the bottom of Luna's cage, so we are helping to keep him comfortable.

He also has some arthritis in his feet, so the more grip we can give him, the better. He's fallen a few times without injury, but we have given him avenues to make his way back up to the tabletop/cages.

Aging is so hard on all living beings, but this is especially hurting our hearts to see him stumble a bit. BeBe will be 19 in July and is the oldest bird we've had to date. Don't you worry though, he is still his feisty self!

10 years ago today, we decided to begin our fostering to adopt journey after Evee passed away a few months earlier, leaving us with only BeBe. It is Luna's gotcha day! We believe he is now 16 and celebrate our sweet little guy today!

Every time we travel, one of the toughest things is leaving our boys behind. With BeBe being 18.5 years old and Luna 16 years old, time is a precious thing. However, they are in excellent hands. See you soon, our loves.

She's been gone since November last year and it was traumatic making the decision to ease her pain. I know she is waiting with the others across that rainbow bridge.
