“A dog hair mat is a clump of tightly tangled fur that forms when a dog’s loose or dead hair wraps around live fur” OUCH 😧
Sometimes groomers have to resort to shaving as the safest solution to hair matting.
Why would they elect to shave a pet’s hair:
𝙋𝘼𝙄𝙉 : repetitive brushing at the mats can be extremely painful for your pet 🥴
𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙆 𝙊𝙁 𝙄𝙉𝙅𝙐𝙍𝙔 : 🤕 once hair is matted brushing can cause sores, bruising or injury to your pets skin
𝙃𝙀𝘼𝙇𝙏𝙃 𝙄𝙎𝙎𝙐𝙀𝙎 : matted hair can trap moisture and bacteria🦠which can lead to infections and hot spots
𝙁𝘼𝙎𝙏𝙀𝙍 𝙍𝙀𝘾𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙔 : shaving allows the skin to breathe and heal from mat related trauma.
Don’t rush to blame owners for matting, it can not only be caused from a lack of brushing, wet coats that aren’t dried completely and /or continuous rubbing from harnesses. It can happen quicker than you think!
Some breeds🐩are more likely to develop matting than others: poodles and doodles, cocker spaniels, overweight cats/long haired cats, Yorkies or long haired/double coated dogs.
HOW TO AVOID:
🧴 Bathe your pet with detangling shampoo
👕 Remove collars and harnesses when not in use
💦 Use detangling sprays
🪮 Brush regularly, at least once a week or add it into your nightly routine
