Next up on our training is : LAY DOWN Teaching your pup to lay down takes more practice and patience, but it is still pretty simple! •start with having your pup sit •when dog is in a sitting position, hold a treat in front of their face and using this treat guide them to the floor slowly •when your dog starts lowering, move the treat away from them more so the dog has to stretch out to reach the treat, this will get them into more of a “lay down” position •at first the dog does not understand what you’re trying to do but just keep repeating this process until your dog lays down, and rewarding them when they finally lay down Dogs feel vulnerable when lying down and it can be hard to get them to stay “down”. Here’s what teaching a 10 week old Bernedoodle how to sit looks like… this was our progress after working on “sit” for 15 minutes • my #1 tip is to stay patient and calm. • puppies have very short attention spans and it’s better to work with them for 10-15 mins everyday, than trying to force them to do something until they master it • when teaching a dog how to sit, it helps to hold a treat in front of their face until they sit, and trying to keep their attention on you and the treat when they get distracted • when they finally sit you then reward them with a treat or kibble and say the word “sit” so they associate what they’re doing and the treat with “sit” •keep working with the dog and continuing this process, but give them breaks and don’t force it. You want to keep a positive attitude and tone, so it is exciting and fun for your dog. You don’t want them to feel like they have to sit or they will be punished, instead you want them to feel like if they sit, they’re rewarded with a treat and praise •another tip is to not only give your dog a treat when they sit, but also verbal praise as well. Only giving them a treat will lead them to be super food motivated. You want your dog to have the mindset that they want to please you and make you happy, which is why giving them verbal praise as well is very important
