***From White Commercial

This time of year is an emotionally charged one for those planting, growing, and hoping to handle fall crops.

Everyone with a vested interest in grain prices is watching weather reports, scouring the internet for photos of dried out, flooded out, and otherwise hard pressed fields, and justifiably worrying about the next new crop.

It's hard to find a year where some area doesn't have a very tough time. No matter how good seed technology and farming practices get, Mother Nature still gets a say.

However, the market is made up of human beings and in a very human way tends to worry too much over the long term.

This leads to some strong seasonal patterns over time. The charts below show a 10 year average but the same chart for 3, 5, 15, or 20 years looks very similar.

Any single year can do whatever it wants to, but over time this is how new crop futures prices tend to behave. We are right in the middle of opportunity season. Only time will tell what the rest of this year holds for new crop prices, but it sure seems like a disservice not to be getting some targets in and/or new crop sales on the books during this time.

It's hard to pull the trigger during the time when everyone is worried about production, but it's also consistently a good idea to get some sold in May and June.

In a market where there is no obvious reason for a rally. If a rally occurs it will be at a time you didn't expect, for a reason you didn't see coming, and it won't last as long as you want it to. Seasonal price tendencies are also important (i.e., Apr/May/June "fall crops are dying" rally tends to happen). Targets are your friend! Stop in or call to get them in!

Here is a video we received from White Commercial and we though it was very informative and wanted to pass it along!

This video touches on pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest things to consider, and three fundamental patterns you need to take into account when marketing your grain. It also goes over a 5 step plan to help you set targets and stay profitable!

"Sell because it's profitable, not because you have to."
