Meet sweet little Ezzy (short for Esmeralda), a 2 year old Senegal parrot. She came in for animal chiropractic initial visit to check everything over after her human heard several times that he should bring her to me. He wasn’t quite sure… a chiropractor? For a parrot?! 🙃

The first area I found to adjust was the left side of her pelvis and left hip! Well, turned out little Ezzy had actually gotten a leg caught in the past flying through a doorway. She had x-rays taken immediately after the incident and no fractures, thank goodness. However, getting a leg caught often gives a good yank on the area, and usually affects the pelvis.

She gets lots of handling with her human (he’s doing such a wonderful job with her) and after those adjustments were given, he already felt a difference in how she perched on his finger. She also had some findings in her neck.

So now what if she had these findings, which weren’t outright apparent as a problem, for years? Well, we’d probably have some arthritis begin to form as well as muscle atrophy. I’ve seen parrots at this stage as well. Animal chiropractic can still help, but it takes much more frequent adjusting and muscle rebuilding. It’s so much easier to start where Ezzy’s at.

Parrots have long lifespans. Senegals on average live 20-30 years, but some have even made it to their 50’s. Getting this addressed at 2 instead of 10 can make a significant impact on her wellbeing and quality of life moving forward.

Ezzy was such a good bird for her first adjustment! I’ll do a re-check in 6 months. If she had been older and had muscle atrophy, that would have been a 2 week follow up instead, and most likely repeating several visits at 2 weeks, depending on the response. Muscles and ligaments support the joints, so if we are lacking that muscle support, adjustments don’t hold as long. Of course, if her owner feels the left talon revert in her perching, we’ll get her in sooner. 🩷

She will sit and relax in a cat tree all day if it is available. Always down for a relaxing day of curling up and napping with her favorite people. Will do best in an easy going environment full of love and care.
