🙏🏼 We could not take such excellent care of the many animals at Scott County Humane Society without our volunteers! Every month we highlight one of our special volunteers – someone who donates their heart and time to the animals in our area who need it most. This month we are celebrating Crystal Dawn Lewis our December 2025 Volunteer of the Month!
🐓 Crystal Dawn Lewis spent her first 13 years in Ohio on a farm, surrounded by ducks, chickens, goats, rabbits, pigs, cows—and a horse or pony of her own. Her dad raised Percheron horses, and she practically grew up in the 4-H and horse barns, showing animals at the fair. She even won Grand Champion with her ducks and chickens.
🐶 But her very favorite animal was her dog, Woofer—a beagle–terrier mix born on her family’s farm after her pregnant mother was abandoned nearby. Her family found loving homes for her mom and the other pups, but Crystal begged to keep Woofer. For 13 wonderful years, she was her best friend and her partner in exploring the woods. She often thinks about how differently Woofer’s life might have turned out if she hadn’t been abandoned near their farm. Please—never abandon animals.
🏡 In 1993, her family moved to Kentucky for her dad’s home-building work in Georgetown. By the early 2000s, Crystal found herself looking forward to events like the Easter bone hunt with the Scott County Humane Society raffles. Later a Halloween costume contest at Country Boy, and of course the Blessing of the Animals. For years, she has relied on SCHS’s rabies and vaccine clinics to keep her dogs healthy and up-to-date. She wants to remind everyone that more volunteers means more animals in Scott County can get the care they need.
🛒 As soon as her schedule allowed, she wanted to get more involved, volunteer, and help bring more pet-friendly events to Georgetown—like the Blessing of the Animals and the Paws in the Pool. The Blessing of the Animals at the Festival of the Horse is still one of her favorite traditions every year. She started volunteering in small steps like helping with check-in at Party for Paws, SCHS’s biggest event of the year. Just a couple of months later, she found herself organizing the two Peddler’s Mall booths using donated pet and household items. As of November 30, those booths have raised more than $12,000 for the Humane Society in 2025, money that goes directly to helping Scott County pets. Please consider donating!
🐾 One of her proudest achievements was turning one booth into a primarily pet-focused booth in August. With the help of friends and some Great Crossing High School students, her dream of a dedicated pet booth came to life. She is endlessly grateful to the friends who showed up with tools, energy, and excitement—and who still help today. She loves when people stop to tell her what treasures they’ve found in the booths or show her pictures of their pets.
🦮 At home, she lives with four spoiled dogs—Mellow, Mocha, Peaches, and Pumpkin—and she believes every animal deserves the same love and safety her dogs have. It breaks her heart to think of the lost and abandoned pets still waiting for someone to care for them.
🚛 To help support her pack’s best life, Crystal works for Ryder Logistics at TMMK, where she sets up, tracks, identifies, and solves problems in the expedited freight side of the parts supply chain along with invoicing reconciliation. She graduated with a business degree from Morehead State University in 2018. Outside of work—and when she is not loving on her fur babies—She enjoys country concerts, bourbon tours, and discovering anything she has never seen before or those she just has to see again!
💙 We are so blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers like Crystal, but we can always use more help! Crystal, your commitment makes a difference and we value you! There are so many animals in our community that need us, and we could not do this work without our incredible volunteers. We thank them for all they do.
