Wholesome Doodle Spa

Wholesome Doodle Spa Professional Doodle Grooming, Training, & Behavior Modification. Hi, my name is Betty Peto. I am the author of Nail it! They are our kids, too.

I am the founder of Doodle Grooming Academy and the Compassionate Dog Grooming Initiative. A Step-by-Step Guide to Wholesome Dog Nail Trimming and From Single to Triple Figures Per Hour - How a Bather Kickstarted Their Solo-groomer Dog Spa. I am a professional dog groomer since 2010, with almost ten years of dog training experience. I saw the benefits of a low-distraction environment combined with

dog training early on in my career. That helped me provide just as a relaxing environment for dogs, as there is for humans out there. It enabled me to leave grooming loops, muzzles, and other restraints behind while keeping dogs safe and comfortable enough to work with them in collaboration instead of "doing stuff to them." Because hey, kids are not restrained for a haircut, why should dogs be, right? I specialized in doodles because I am in love with high-energy level dogs and saw the doodle pawrents' need for help with hair maintenance, tools, dog handling, and doodle specified, custom hairstyles for their babies. I've heard "Don't poodle my doodle!" at first timer drop off so many times as the pawrents' desperate cry for help, it imprinted on my soul, and made me rethink the possibilities I can provide for pawrents and their doodles. I came across more and more questions and passionate doodle pawrents who wanted to learn significantly more about doodle hair care and haircuts than I could provide at the meet and greet talks, drop-offs, pickups, on online forums, and in online groups. That gentle but persistent push made the Doodle Grooming Academy slowly unfold. My favorite areas of grooming are nail trimming, gentle detangling and dematting, and behavior modification compassionately. To express my passion for dog nails, and to help professionals and worried pawrents of any breeds learn how to befriend and master safe nail care for their babies and their clients, I developed a trustworthy and joyful method for nail trimming and wrote Nail it! A Step-by-Step Guide to Wholesome Dog Nail Trimming. I am the mom of many furry and feathery babies. I have a Malinois (Toki), a Maltipoo (Picur), and four cats (Mr. Chips, Pupak, Luna, and Cuki). My husband and I and the gang live in Georgetown, Texas.

From a local gardener:

This tick has been on display for us to show people for a while. After months in a sealed container without any additional feeding, she laid eggs. This demonstrates how long a tick can remain dormant and how many eggs one female can lay. Remember, ticks become active again in the fall, so continue with preventive measures.

If you encounter a small pile of jelly-like balls in your garden, act immediately! These are tick eggs and they're set to hatch soon.

Either set them on fire or destroy them by soaking in isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to wear gloves if you handle the nest, as it contains hundreds of tick eggs that will hatch in a few weeks. I believe it's important to share this post because tick bites can be dangerous.

Stay safe and informed to protect yourself and your garden from these tiny but dangerous creatures!

GIFT OF THE GROWL

Not all growling is a sign that a dog’s unhappy. Some growls may be part of a particular play style, seeking attention, from frustration, excitement or other reasons. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to that particular dog.

This post is not about different types of growls, but about reactive, aggressive or early warning growls.

When a dog growls, especially when it’s directed at us, our natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry.

Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, it’s not acceptable, it’s a problem that needs to be stopped or punished so a dog learns that it’s wrong, disrespectful and unacceptable, right?

This couldn’t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with very valuable information.

In their way, they have just told us how they feel about a situation without escalating to a bite.

Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily not have even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.

A dog that growls is trying to communicate how they feel. Ignoring or punishment only suppresses this communication. Punishment increases fear, anxiety and stress.

A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesn’t bite.

Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Learn to recognise body language and specific situations that trigger it.

Be grateful for the gift of a growl – this is a non-violent early warning signal that we need to acknowledge, understand and respect.

It's a gift of clear communication that allows us to intervene, advocate and prevent escalation to a bite.

14 years ago today, I dared to board a plane in London to L.A. which turned my life upside down. Finally, I was facing upwards and puzzles started to fall into place.

This is exactly why I do dog-led grooming and why I don't use grooming loops. It's either a willing, collaborative spa day on both ends, or the grooming stops and training begins. Bringing respect to the game changes the game furever for everyone, for good.

What I learned from my heart and soul dogs, Pongo (RiP 9/11/2001-7/22/2018), and Tonka (RiP 9/11/2001-2/9/2018):

The shift in my dogs' body language was quite evident as I moved away from calling them "commands" and started using "cues" alongside my crossing over from using choke chains (left photo, you can see the metal choke chain ring on Tonka, age 6) to a Fear-Free, choice-rich relationship (right photo, consistent learning history of reward-based, ethical training from ages 6 to two months shy of 17).

It's a simple shift in terminology, but it forever alters your perspective on training when letting go of the concept of a mandate vs a request for consent.

Body language doesn't lie.

What is a FFF***y trim?
It's short for Face, Feet, F***y trim, and nails trimmed and filed to keep pups comfortable between haircuts. It's a great, low-key intro for puppies into grooming and an excellent way to keep sensitive spots tangle and mat-free without the need of brushing. (Think armpits, inner thighs, PP/vulva/behind the ears/etc. areas.)
Generally, it's recommended for doodles to get a FFF***y and nails every 4-6 wks so the hair won't grow out of control.

I have three wolves in me. The dog groomer, the dog trainer, and the dog mom. I aim for a great hairstyle, do it in collaboration with the dog (without loops), and provide it in a comfortable way by the dog's standards. (1-on-1 only, no cages, cage dryers, overwhelmingly long appointments.)

Our Story

Hi there, :) My name is Betty. Dogs are my passion. As simple, but as deep as that. I am a dog groomer (with almost 10 years of dog training experience) & dog lover in one person. I think, dog grooming and dog training are really deeply connected to each other. You need both if you want to achieve excellent outcome either in the dog park or on the grooming table. I use Giraffe language and dog training techniques with my four legged clients and they really enjoy spending time with me, even when they ended up in the tub and in front of the blow-dryer. My goal is to share my experiences with doodles and help doodle moms and dads, how to take care of their doodle’s coat at home, the gentle and effective way. I want your doodle (and you!) to feel comfortable while being groomed & I would like to invite you to a leash, grooming loop and muzzle free spa day, with pampering and attention you get from the most exclusive spas yourself. In this case your doodle is the lucky one for the pampering session! :) I am a label detective and I carefully watch the type of the ingredients and the source of them in my doggy products. I use chemical free, natural and eco-friendly grooming supplies, organic whenever available. If you have any questions email to my booking assistant, we are happy to answer your questions! Tank you for your time & have a wonderful day! :) Belly rubs to your doodle! Betty, The Groomer Chick ;-) :)
