If your pet ever experiences diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence and vomiting, your vet may recommend testing for , a microbial parasite. Easily spread, dogs and cats (and even humans!) can contract giardia through fecal-contaminated water, food, and soil. Given common everyday interactions with all three, infections can happen easily. Even though the public water bowl at your local coffee shop is a kind offering in theory, it may be time to rethink your pet’s next sip.

For the full 411 on diagnosing and treating this highly contagious infection, visit our website: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/treatment-for-giardia-in-cats-and-dogs

Dogs and cats have a much higher sense of hearing than us humans do. While we may hear fireworks as musical pops, our pets experience them with much higher intensity! 🎆

As with thunder and lightning, displays of fireworks are unpredictable and cause a lot of confusion for our pets. Cats and dogs can't understand what is happening when they hear fireworks, which instinctively triggers their fight-or-flight response to unknown threats.

When you know fireworks will soon be lighting up the sky nearby, prepare beforehand using our guide: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/how-to-calm-pets-during-fireworks

I can only judge by how he reacts to the staff and he's always excited to see them... except for the people on the vet side, LOL - he knows who is who! Everyone including the vet side takes exceptional care of Gus and his needs. We are happy that he is well loved by all! It's important to check your dog for ticks regularly, especially after they spend time outdoors. Run your fingers through their fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps. If you find a tick, you can either try to remove it yourself or take your dog to your nearest pet urgent care or an emergency pet hospital for help.

If you choose to remove the tick from your dog, follow the steps below:

🕷️ Use tweezers (or a tick remover instrument like a Tick Key) to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, removing the whole head and body.
🕷️ Pull the tick straight out with slow and steady pressure. (If the head of the tick is left in the skin, it can cause an infection and still transmit disease, so make sure the whole body is removed!)
🕷️ Once the tick is removed, you can place it in a sealed container in case your vet wants to test it for diseases.
🕷️ Clean the area of your dog’s skin with soap and water then apply a pet-safe antiseptic.
🕷️ Contact your vet for advice on next steps. They may ask you to bring the tick in for testing.

"We had one of the scariest events to happen to us this past weekend. Our sweet Taco had gotten into the big dog’s food and began to choke. Between my hubby and I trying everything we could within a minute, we immediately rushed him to the emergency vet. We called on the way and the amazing staff at All Valley Animal Care center was at the door to take him right away and their fast action saved our little guys life. He was sedated, the food was removed from behind his palate and with some steroids, antibiotics, anti-nausea antacids and a touch and go evening in oxygen, he was back home with us by the next morning. Our little guy was a fighter. Love your babies and take quick action in an emergency. If we didn't get him there when we did, he would not have made it! Without the amazing staff at All Valley, our baby wouldn't be here. We are forever grateful!" - Kathy W. and Taco 🐾 on their experience at All Valley Animal Care Center in Meridian, ID

Many of the diseases that parasites cause can spread from your pet to you and your family, too. Pests like ticks and fleas can crawl or hitch a ride into your home on shoes, clothing, or even on the fur of another pet. Itchy yet? Let’s talk pests:

🕷️ Ticks 🕷️
Not only are ticks a threat to our pets, but an estimated 476K Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.* They aren’t just a warm weather issue, either: contrary to popular belief, ticks don’t die in the winter and do not hibernate, either. If you or your pet spend time in grassy or wooded areas, get in the habit of spot-checking yourself and them for these small, spider-like creatures after every outing. If you find one, pull it off carefully and intact, then call your vet.

🐜 Fleas 🐜
These teeny-tiny jumping parasites aren’t just annoying for the itchy rashes they cause in pets and people. Studies have shown that the plague is once again on the rise and that fleas are one of the culprits. Fleas can multiply and jump from host to host alarmingly fast, so if you catch your pet itching more than usual, have them checked for fleas ASAP.

If you have a dog, you should know about foxtails, which are the dried seed heads of certain grasses. Their distinctive shape resembles the tail of a fox or stalk of wheat. In the spring and summer, they thrive in fields and along roadsides and hiking trails across much of the US. 🌾

can lodge into your dog’s ears, paws, and nose—causing discomfort and leading to infections if they aren’t removed. Learning to spot these spiky grasses and how to check your dog from nose to tail can go far in preventing injuries. If you find a foxtail and can’t remove it, take your pet to the closest urgent or emergency care vet for removal and follow-up care. With temperatures starting to climb in many parts of the country right now, it's important to keep an eye on our furry friends, as cats and dogs are highly susceptible to heat-related emergencies. 🌡️

To beat the heat, we recommend:
✅ bringing water for your dog when on hikes or walks.
✅ avoiding walks during the hottest parts of the day.
✅ steering clear of new or longer routes that may overexert your pet.
✅ walking in the shade and on grass whenever possible.

🐾 If your pet has burned paw pads or is showing any warning signs of or , seek urgent care.

With weekend kicking off cookout season, here's a refresher on common foods you should NEVER feed pets! While most pet owners know that certain foods like chocolate, onions and garlic and grapes pose serious health risks for dogs and cats, visiting friends, family and children may not. It’s a smart idea to remind your guests to NOT feed your pet table foods - especially if they are expert beggars. 🍔🌭🍖

If you suspect your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t have, go directly to the closest emergency vet if your veterinarian is not available. Be sure to bring the item ingested, if possible, to help them diagnose and treat your pet.

that ONE bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes to transmit to your dog or cat? Scary, but true. Mosquitoes thrive all over the US, and not just during summer: different breeds are active throughout the year. 🦟

Treating disease caused by parasites in dogs can be complex and costly, and options are limited for cats. But there is good news: oral, injectable, or topical preventive medications are effective ways to protect your pet and are much more affordable than treatment itself, but *only* if your pet receives the recommended dose on a monthly or yearly basis. Your vet can help find the right preventative for your pet based on their lifestyle and health needs, so don’t delay: book a visit today! 👩‍⚕

it’s important to wash your pet’s food and water bowls regularly, ideally every day. 🧼 In a recent study conducted by NSF, dirty pet bowls have been ranked as the fourth germiest place in our homes, just behind toothbrush holders and the kitchen sink! 🙀 Experts recommend pet dishes be washed daily, either in a sanitizing dishwasher cycle or scrubbed by hand with hot soapy water, then rinsed thoroughly and left to air dry.

"My dog Roseanne was recently diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma by our regular vet and my friend recommended me Dr. Bommarito as a cancer doctor for Roseanne. I am so glad we came here, even if it's a far drive, coming here for treatment makes me feel that Roseanne is in good hands. the facility is very clean and they are very organized, but best of all, the doctor is very responsive. I would email after office hours, weekends, and would be surprised that Dr. Bommarito would answer any of my concerns. Roseanne's cancer is malignant so I am not sure she will be cured but I know we are giving her a fighting chance and the best treatment possible.” - Aimee P. and Roseanne 🐾 on their experience at Veterinary Cancer Group of Los Angeles

05/10/2024

Scabies (or Sarcoptic Mange) is one of the most uncomfortable skin diseases that a dog can contract. This highly contagious condition is caused by extremely small mites that can cause severe itching and skin irritation and will significantly impact a dog’s quality of life. In dogs, the areas most affected by scabies are those with less hair, such as the ear flaps, elbows, legs, stomach, and chest.

Common symptoms include:
1️⃣ Constant itching at any time of year
2️⃣ Hair loss
3️⃣ Reddened rash
4️⃣ Yellowish crusts formed on the skin and ear tips
5️⃣ Severe scratches (from all that itching)

Compared to other skin parasites like fleas, skin mites are microscopic and almost impossible to see with the naked eye. 🔍 A definitive diagnosis is often difficult, so a visit to your vet is essential if you think your dog may have .

that many flea- and tick-borne illnesses that affect dogs and cats can also affect us? According to the CDC, about 467K Americans are diagnosed with each year, but only a fraction is officially reported. Lyme disease is present in all 50 states, with regions in the Northeast at higher risk.

“If you have a dog or cat, chances are higher that you will encounter fleas and ticks than households without pets, making it incredibly important to have your pet on a year-round flea and tick treatment,” says Dr. Kelly Cairns, VP of Medical Excellence and Education at Thrive Pet Healthcare. “Veterinarian-prescribed preventatives are the best way to reduce the likelihood of your pet bringing fleas and ticks into the home and protect pets from harmful parasite-related illnesses.”
