(well maybe not so) long ago and far away. . .
one of my birds, on a routine flight was thrown off course and landed in northern Cincinnati, of all places.
Injured and starving it showed up on the porch of some kind souls who captured it and called the # phone number on the band
Quick response and a courier was on it's way to pick it up and not a moment too soon. The band around it's leg had been flattened, dare I say crushed, cutting off some of the circulation to the foot, which caused some swelling. A pair of cutters removed the band on site and she is now back and home, safe and sound. Hopefully for a speedy recovery. The bird, a breeder female is named : Ria, and wouldn't you know, ended up seeking refuge at a home on :
Rhode Island Ave. ( RIA )
Thank you to that family who cared enough to get involved. Your kindness, does not go unnoticed !

I also feed a mixture of red grit and crushed oyster shell.
The percentage varies depending if it's going to hens with eggs or chicks or just young birds.
Laying mesh, like farmers use for egg laying hens, is another product that has served me well. . .

I had access to an old coup on an abandoned farm, where once was a thriving loft, 200 strong. No birds had been there for over a year since the past owner removed them. I would always see strong flocks fly overhead, so I had the idea to rig the door to swing only one way, outside along the gravel drive, place some bait scattered in a six foot circle a mere 30 foot away and last but not least, throw in a few bachelor males that would 'coo' their heads off at the sight or sound of another pigeon. Today...it paid off !
Man those wild birds are puny and razor thin. I'm guessing just 4-6 weeks old, but they're mine. One even has a little red or brown tint, something I don't have. They will be kept separate , of course...
