Here are a few helpful tips for our dogs in this brutal cold weather. Their feet need to be protected! Place some straw down for a pathway to do their business. Straw is a great insulator and will reflect body heat back to your dog. Straw actually repels moisture. Booties or Musher’s are another option and actually necessary if they are walking on salt to avoid frostbite and burns. Stay warm friends!

As many of you know, my mobile grooming spa has given her two weeks notice today! It is time to park it. But not me!! After Thanksgiving , I will be grooming exclusively from home! This is a big change and am adjusting to this new reality. Due to this change, I will start accepting a few new clients-small and medium size dogs only. I will also take on some new pet sitting clients , no size discrimination there! You can read a bit more at www.theelegantpet.net. For those of you who cannot continue our journey together , I wish you all the best and Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for trusting me with your pets. You helped me through some rough times as a single parent and treated my children with such kindness and for that I am forever grateful. I will miss the talks , the laughters , the tears that some of us have had for over 20 years. For those of you that I will continue to see, Thankyou ,Thankyou for your loyalty, it means the world to me. When one door closes, another opens. On to the next chapter!

Tuesday Tip: How to keep up with all that ” dog hair”? Simple answer is brushing, proper brushing for the kind of coat that is dropping. In this photo you can see a fuzzy undercoat and the harsher outer coat that came out. It is a good idea to lightly spray the coat prior to brushing to avoid pulling and causing breakage. The tool here is a Kong brand called Zoom Groom. It works great for the outer coat which labs like this are notorious for shedding year round. A quick daily “zoom” in the direction the coat lays goes a long way.

Tuesday tip: This warmer weather gives our pups spring fever. With the ice melting, be aware that ice can cut like glass. Check those paws after a good romp for cuts and frost bite. It is good practice for the upcoming muddy paw season! #

Tuesday Tip: It is National Pet Dental Health Month, so that is our topic this month. Is it important to brush to your dog’s teeth? YES!! If you can stomach the second photo, you can see what our foster dog’s mouth looked like before having to have 18 teeth pulled at the age of 8. Brushing is the best way to prevent this , which is severely painful and costly. Tooth and gum infections can go right to the blood stream. A basic toothbrush and doggie toothpaste( it tastes better) is all you need. It’s a habit and a great one to get into. The more often the better. I do offer this as a service with a treatment that can help reduce plaque build up . I highly recommend regular brushing!

Tuesday tip: In general, it is best to use tepid water to bathe your dog. Their normal internal temperature is higher than ours and they do not have sweat glands all over like we do. That means releasing heat is more challenging. Too warm of water can be damaging just like for us. That’s a general rule. Coat and skin maladies , breed and age of the dog may require a change in temperature. Always check the temperature on your skin first . Lastly, make sure your pet is comfortable and adjust accordingly.

Tuesday tip: Hello 2023! Still dealing with your itchy dog? Last year, I talked about what we can do externally to help the “itchies” . Today, I put on my Canine Nutritionist and Vet Tech hat on to give you a few helpful tips. What can we do on the inside to help? Fish oil is a great supplement. If you can’t feed fish in the most natural form then a quality oil is the next best thing. Like an oil, pay attention to shelf life and where it is sourced. Not oils are the same. Coconut oil has many benefits as well. If oils aren’t your thing, try a freeze dried fish, no mess! Another wonderful internal boost is a soil based probiotic. A healthy gut, is a healthy pup! When introducing anything new to the diet, especially oils, go slow! Looking forward to seeing some healthy, shiny coats!

Tuesday tips: How does our environment affect the itchy dog? The dry, winter air and furnace can reach havoc on our dogs. Both can really dry out cost and skin causing itchiness. Coats and sweaters , as necessary as they can be for certain pups can add to the dilemma. We can’t change Mother Nature’s plans but can make sure our indoor environment has humidity. Proper brushing helps to remove dead coat , help with blood circulation and spread natural oils. Next week, I will suggest a few things we can give our dogs to help from the inside out!
