It’s that time of year! Flea and tick prevention is so important. Angie gave a dog a bath today and ended up pulling 110 ticks off of the dog by the time she was done. Thankfully this particular dog is given monthly flea and tick meds so all 110 ticks were dead when they were found. Flea and tick meds work by entering the dogs system and becoming active in the tissue, bloodstream, and skin. This means when a flea or tick bites the dog, they ingest the meds and ultimately die. Talk to your veterinarian with any questions about which flea and tick preventative is best for your dog.

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

We got out one of the pools from last year and before filling it we realized it had a pretty big crack in it. We were about to throw it in the dumpster until Winston asked, “could I play with that for just a minute before you throw it out?” 🤣🤣🤣 💦 🗑️ 🐶 Goofy dog.

4/13/24 ~ REUNITED!!! After 14 days we are so thankful to report that Abby was safely trapped at 9:15pm last night!! Abby stayed within a 3 mile circle but with no regularity. Her family was tireless and so determined to bring her home. They posted flyers, utilized the services of Dylan Myers' drone and monitored/maintained food stations and eventually traps which finally brought her home!
It is so difficult to explain to an owner why their very loved family member doesn't come to them when seen yet they melt like butter after capture and safe. This was the case with Abby, she would trot off like she didn't know them yet once captured Abby whimpered like a baby and was so happy to be safe!
On behalf of her family, we would like to thank the entire community that helped by reporting sightings, allowing us to use their properties in any way needed to bring sweet Abby home!
With special gratitude to the Reichart family!

Factoid: Virtually everything about a Bloodhound’s phenotype is dedicated to helping the hound create an “odor image” (a sort of smell photograph) in the dog’s brain. When the head is carried low, loose, wrinkly skin falls into draping pendulous ridges and folds that trap scent, especially over the forehead and sides of the face. Droopy ears act as “scent sweepers” by dragging the group and sweeping smells toward the dog’s nose. They also serve to prevent wind from scattering nearby skin cells as the dog’s nose is on the ground. Up front, the dog’s lips fall squarely, making a right angle with the upper line of the foreface. Behind, they form deep, hanging flews, and continue into the pendant folds of loose skin about the neck constituting the dewlap which is very pronounced.

Folds of wrinkled flesh under the Bloodhound’s lips and neck help catch stray scent particles in the air or even on a nearby branch as the Bloodhound is scenting, reinforcing the scent in the dog’s memory and nose.

This really is, figuratively speaking, a nose with a dog attached. Researchers have estimated that a Bloodhound’s nose consists of approximately 230 million olfactory cells, or “scent receptors” — 40 times the number in humans. The surface area of the Bloodhound olfactory epithelium is 59 sq.in. compared to human’s 10 sq.cm.

Circling back to that “odor image,” it works like this: When a Bloodhound sniffs a scent article, air rushes through his or her nasal cavity, and chemical v***rs (odors) lodge in the mucus and bombard the hound’s scent receptors. Chemical signals are then sent to the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain that analyzes smells, and an “odor image” is created. This “image” is far more detailed than a photograph is for a human. Using the odor image as a reference, the Bloodhound can locate a subject’s trail which is made up of a chemical cocktail of scents including breath, sweat v***r, and skin rafts. Once the bloodhound identifies the trail, it will not divert its attention despite being assailed by a multitude of other odors. Just ask a Bloodhound owner what its like to get their dog to move once s/he’s gotten interested in a scent. Only when the dog finds the source of the scent or reaches the end of the trail will it relent. So potent is the drive to track, Bloodhounds have been known to stick to a trail for more than 130 miles!

04/01/2024

Years ago, multiple cats were dropped off at CCK for their scheduled boarding reservation while their owners were away. Unfortunately, they never returned to pick up their cats. A few of the cats were older with a variety of medical issues and the youngest of the group ended up being pregnant. Coleen was able to find homes for all of the cats (the senior cats as well as the kittens)…except for the young female tortishell. Did no one want her because of her spicy independent attitude? Probably 😉 but that didn’t bother us and ultimately the decision was made to let her stay. For years, clients have been used to seeing our girl Emerson patrolling and/or sun bathing in the office. Some of you have had the pleasure of petting her with no injury, but there’s plenty of others that can’t say the same 😂 as it was very normal that she’d give you a good swat if you would reach out your hand to touch her.
In 2020, we noticed what appeared to be a cyst on Emerson’s paw and made an appointment at the vet to have to looked at. It was biopsied and the results were what every pet owner doesn’t want to hear. Cancer. We made the decision to have the tumor removed with the understanding (per Emerson’s vet) that eventually it would come back and would more than likely spread to her lymph nodes. We wholeheartedly did not expect that she would live another 4 years after her cancer diagnosis but we will be forever grateful that she did.
Many clients have asked how she’s been doing regarding her medical issues and Angie’s answer has always been the same “she’ll tell me when she’s ready”. Emerson has been declining rapidly over the last two weeks and has made it very clear to Angie and the staff that it is time. This coming Wednesday Angie will take Emerson to the vet to help her peacefully make her way across the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈 ♥️ To say that we will miss having her around is definitely an understatement but we are blessed beyond measure for all of the years we got to call her our kennel cat. She truly was the real manager and the one running the show around here. She’s irreplaceable and will forever remain in our hearts. ♾️ 🐾 🐈‍⬛
