Puppy Socialization
"Puppies that are well socialized are more secure adults, and more adaptable adults. If nothing else is done, the most important thing a puppy owner can do is expose the puppy to as many things as possible. To be beneficial, these exposures must be positive."
The puppies had an amazing time today playing with their mama, daddy, and bloodhound uncle. They are so lively and brave right now!
Learning basic commands. Puppies are like sponges at this age. The earlier we train, the better off they'll be. Bassets are notoriously food motivated! You can do training at any time during the day. I find the best time is when they are least expecting it. If they jump to listen to you and get their treats they are doing well! You can use a clicker, sweet encouragements, or the simple word "Yes!" Alongside the administration of treats of course!
We've talked about desensitization. It is so important but often overlooked. As you can see here, the puppies are still playing and ignoring the noise of the barking dog recording. They've gotten to the point where they are currently sleeping through the noise of barking. This will keep them calm and relaxed in a situation where they might hear another dog barking in the future. Litter A has been desensitized to many sounds at this point. Construction noise, children playing/laughing, and sick sounds (coughing and sneezing) are next on our agenda.
Little Martha is very content to play alone. She really loves toys. Melissa and Jessica love to play together and chew on each other. As you can see, the boys are much lazier than the girls.
Good morning from the Backyard Bassets! Jessica is my shadow. She is always looking up, looking for me. She follows me around and always wants to play with me. She's a sweetheart. Ramblin' Man is usually pretty chill, he likes to play but only for a bit and then he goes back to sleeping pretty quickly. Little Martha is finally becoming playful, up until this point she's been very independent, playing alone or just observing. Martha is my husband's favorite because of her laid back personality.
Check out the new digs! A nice big area to play and run around.
Tomorrow these beautiful pups turn 5 weeks old. I can hardly believe how quickly the time is flying by. I want them to slow down and stay tiny forever!
Why is desensitization important?
Desensitization helps improve your pup's quality of life. Exposure to different sounds can make a well rounded puppy. Puppies who are not exposed to a variety of sounds can develop fear or anxiety towards common noises, like a blender or a vacuum. We want to make sure our dogs are well equipped to handle whatever life throws at them!
Sounds they've been exposed to and mastered:
City ambiance, Farm ambiance, Rain/thunder sounds, Door-Bells and Knocking, Cat Sounds, Washing Machines, Automobile/Engine sounds, Train sounds, Lawnmower sounds, and the most exciting one- Fireworks!
Sounds we are working on getting comfortable with:
Sleigh Bells/Jingling, Crying Baby, Dog barking/whimpering, construction noises.
I'm very pleased with their progress so far. The earlier we introduce these sounds, the more relaxed the dog will be as they grow up and encounter these noises in day to day life.
Basset Hound Chorus! That Hound dog howl is classic. These pups are just finding their voices!
Little Martha taking a litttle nap. All of the pups can now open their eyes. Also look at that chunky little paw!
When you're out milking goats and check the cam only to find a sweet scene. Jolene is such a good mama, she is so attentive to her pups
The love between a family and their Basset Hound is an unbreakable, unwavering, bond. I have never encountered a breed that's more loving, faithful, and sweet. Basset families know the feeling, the look of trust they give you and those kind eyes that seems to listen and understand you. I fell in love with this breed at a young age and I can't imagine my life without bassets.
Our night time routine, Jolene knows that I'm here for her and that I love her. She does have an open door to leave her box as she pleases, but of course, she's been spending lots of time with her pups. In order to strengthen our bond and trust, I've been making sure to hang out with everyone before I head off to bed each night. Please excuse my pajamas, but I felt like capturing this sweet moment tonight.
Basset Puppy mumbles and yawns! The sweetest little noises from the A litter tonight.
And the theme for our very first litter is....
