Never assume anything about a horse's training, meaning when you first meet a horse, don’t just take someone’s word about how well trained (or not) the horse is. Assume that the horse knows nothing and start from the ground up. That way, he can tell you where his holes are and you can fix them accordingly.

I had so much fun helping the Buena Vista Mavericks get ready for 4H county finals last night. I got my start in 4H so I try to take every opportunity to give back to it.

So grateful for wonderful clients!

I wanted to say thank you for ambassador Staci Hancock. Because you hold a high standard for that folks that learn from you I had an awesome lesson with Staci. My mare would get in the trailer but lose her mind and kick the crap out of the trailer. I don't have the endurance or experience to fix it, but Staci does. The last hour of our lesson, Staci got my mare to load and not flip out. We drove around the block and NO kicking of the trailer. Staci will come back tomorrow for our second lesson and I can't wait. Cheers and thanks again for all the great ambassadors and professional clinicians. - Irene Jones

One of the best lessons I learned in the Academy was to prioritize exercises and use the time I had in the most effective way. For example, when you’re letting your horse air up, don’t just sit there – work on desensitizing him. For me, the whole experience was learning how to condense what used to take me six months to accomplish with a horse down to six weeks.

I get asked a lot how I manage training horses full time in the Valley of the Sun. It can be a challenge when it gets to 120 during the day and cools off to a brisk 90 degrees at night. I hear Clinton Anderson in my head saying, "No one has ever drowned in their own sweat," but there are things that I do to keep my horses safe in this weather.

- Let's knock the obvious answers out of the way right away. Access to fresh water and shade. Misters and fans can help a lot as well.

- Arena lights are a must have, as well as wonderful neighbors that won't complain when your arena lights are on all night long. Yesterday I finished getting all my horses ridden and worked a little after 1 am.

- My academy horses are free fed, but for my other horses that aren't in a high intensity training program, I do adjust feedings to make sure they have something in their belly before I ride. I haven't always had the luxury of being able to ride horses for a living. I worked full time in the veterinary field for several years. During this time, I would get up between midnight and 3am to get my horses ridden before going into work for a 10 hour shift. I am a firm believer that if you want something bad enough, nothing will stop you.

- Salt! My horses have access to a salt block year round and I supplement with loose salt in addition to the salt block during the summer months. Research has been done by Kentucky Equine Research determining whether loose salt or salt blocks are better: "Results of the trial indicated that salt intake was more consistent from week to week when horses were offered a block, though total consumption of the loose form was greater. Water consumption was significantly increased when horses were given access to loose salt."

- I hose my horses off at least once midday and also after riding. I think we've all heard the myth that hosing horses off isn't actually effective and has the opposite effect. "The belief that cold water can harm a horse has been thoroughly debunked based on extensive research conducted during 1995 at the University of Illinois and University of Guelph and at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. Researchers proved conclusively that horses working under hot and humid conditions were better able to maintain core body temperature within an acceptable range, or even reduce, it and also reduce heart rate during rest periods after intense phases, when ice water baths were used."
