Did you know each hen's egg is unique? Each hen has her own unique color, shape, and size. Even in the same breed, the eggs will be slightly different between hens. I can usually tell which legbar hen laid which blue egg based on the shape and shade. Is your backyard flock all one breed or a variety? We have done both over the years and have settled on keeping a variety. I love having a colorful flock and a basket full of Easter eggs every morning!

Shallan's babies were a little wary of me after getting their horns removed this morning. Some snuggles and comforting soon had them reassured and bouncy again! They are so cute! I'm enjoying having just five kids and two mamas right now... another month and the barn will be overflowing with mamas and babies!

We are just over two weeks into breeding, and it looks like everyone has already done their job πŸ˜„ Besides Posidon, shown here romancing Strawberry, we are using three of our young bucks! Eclipse (Kya x Neptune) is a buckling from this year who is looking so nice I couldn't resist trying him out on our junior doe lineup. Loki (Kya x Baatar) is two years old and I've been watching closely to see if I would like him enough. We just lost Baatar, and I am really liking how Loki has turned out, so he is breeding a few of this year's first fresheners. Mic Drop (Moondrop x Frank) is another two year old I've been watching and liking, so he is in with Kya and Launa! I'm excited to see how babies turn out!

Happy Autumn Equinox! Fall has always been my favorite season. The weather is finally cooler, and the best holidays are coming! There's a feeling of mystery and excitement in the airπŸ‚
This week, we will be traveling to northern climates for a family wedding and then visiting grandkids. That means breeding plans for the goats will be a little later this year, but that's ok - I'll have two extra weeks to decide which bucks to breed some very exciting yearling does to! It's a hard decision! We have two sister pairs - one set out of Prinzess and one out of Opal, as well as a beautiful doe out of Penelope. The future of Fairywood Farm!

Meet Agatha! She is the great-granddaughter of our sweet Angelica. She is for sure one of our keeper doelings this year, fourth generation lovely white and gold with solid milk production πŸ₯›πŸ₯›πŸ₯›
It's just about time to start breeding for spring! Agatha will wait until next year so she can keep growing, but we are very excited about some of our upcoming plans πŸ˜€

A member of the farm that often goes unnoticed but is so important for the vitality and health of our soil. I am always happy to see when some fungus fruits with its beautiful and fascinating mushrooms. I've been watching these develop over the past few days and thinking of the little bit of fairy magic they might be bringing to Fairywood Farm πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈ

Goat smiles in the morning are the sweetest πŸ˜„
Goats are so curious and will follow you around, often wanting to get involved in the task (usually not in an actual helpful way πŸ˜†). I was taking pictures of the little babies in the pen next to her when Lindy popped up to see what was going on. She seemed to want her photo taken too, so here she is πŸ’•

Happy birthday, Blue!
Blue is our oldest goat and the very first doe we brought home when we decided to rebuild our herd. She turned 10 years old on May 5th! We have had her since she was 6 months old, had reserved her as a baby, but had to wait to get through our reset. She has been such a valuable member of the herd and family! Her kids are always an improvement and very flashy and dairy. She is Prinzess' mom, and Prinzess is probably my most favorite doe we have ever produced here!

In this picture taken a few days ago, Blue is with her single doeling from this year.

This has been a very busy spring here at Fairywood We had 49 kids born to 19 does, all in the middle of both of our sons getting married!! I have to share this beautiful arrangement made by my very talented friend Ruth . Knowing we were having a Hobbit themed wedding, she had the idea to make something whimsical using driftwood. I happened to have this really cool piece collected by my Oma years ago. We have used it for displaying everything from nature gatherings to fairy houses over the years, so it was very special to have it turned into a wedding centerpiece. I am always so enchanted and amazed at what Ruth includes in her arrangements! I love the moss, the roses and tulips, delphiniums, and snapdragons, but my favorite in this one was the mulberry branches complete with little berries. She just knows what is meaningful and so very personal ❀️

We may not do a lot with our horses, but I love the gentle ways they have woven into our life. Our son Robin grew up playing in this field, running barefoot through the neighborhood down the ditches, riding the ponies, and adventuring with his friends. It was tender for me to watch him and his beautiful bride on their wedding day, taking a quiet moment to greet the horses.
🀍
There is something so peaceful about horses grazing in the background, their soft nickers of greeting when offered a carrot or apple, their eager, velvety muzzles pushing in to your hand, manes tossing, ears flicking toward you, eyes half closing in pleasure when you find that perfect spot on a fuzzy neck to scratch, then back too heads down in the green grass 🀍

Another sweet goat family moment ❀️
This is Jasnah and Shallan, Prinzess' daughters from last year. They do run around the pasture independently and have their own friends, but when it comes to relaxing time, they are always together πŸ‘―πŸ½β€β™€οΈ.
I don't usually keep two out of the same litter, but Prinzess is one of my most productive milkers with such a sweet personality, and these girls were both so pretty that I just couldn't decide! Also, naming them after two of my favorite fictional characters made it hard to separate them πŸ˜… (Brandon Sanderson fans will be able to guess which is which πŸ˜‰)
I'm excited to breed these two later this year, and I'm hoping we can time it so they raise their babies together πŸ₯°
