It's National Fetch Day!
Playing fetch with your dog is a great way to build your bond and burn off some excess energy. Giving them a job can help reduce anxiety as their focus is temporarily directed elsewhere during this game. Once your dog learns how to play, they are normally excited to keep playing as well! You can see this by them quickly running back to give you the ball again, wagging their tail, and even anticipating the throw.
Today's a great day to get out there and throw the ball!

Socialization Myths and Tips!
Most dog owners are aware of socialization and the importance of socializing their dog as a puppy. However, there are many misconceptions and myths surrounding socialization such as the following:
🐕 Adult/Senior Dog can't be socialized - if you have a busy social life and adopt an older dog, it's not a bad idea to slowly warm them up to new strangers! This makes having a party easier on your pup to handle verses surprising them with a bunch of strangers in the house.
🐕 My new dog will learn from my old dog - while this can be true for building confidence, it can also be true for teaching them to be territorial, resource guard, etc.
🐕 Training classes are all I need to socialize my puppy - consistent, new experiences help prepare your pup for anything and in a good training class, the last thing your pup should be focused on is other dogs.
🐕 Sudden loud noises or meeting more dogs/people when my dog is fearful will help him get use to them - this technique is called flooding and can be more harmful that good! This is the equivalent to putting someone who is scared of bees in a room full of them with no escape.
Being aware of your dog's personality, life style, and genetics play a large role in safely socializing your pup. If you have any questions about socializing your dog or need more helpful tips, give our office a call today!

September is also Happy Cat Month!
Outside of veterinary care, mental/physical stimulation is crucial to having a happy and healthy cat! Not offering these things would be the equivalent of you just going to the doctor, and eating/sleeping all day every day!
Here are some quick tips to make your cat's life more enjoyable!
🐱 Implementing at least 2-3 instances of play each day for ~15 minutes.
🐱 Pull up a bird or fish youtube video for them to watch
🐱 Offer tunnels and climbing towers for them to play on
🐱 Rotate toys, maybe leave the mouse toys out for a week then switch to bell toys for another week
🐱 Let them "hunt". Toss treats or kibble on the floor one at a time for them to chase after.
Keep life exciting! Whatever enrichment you offer, it will not only benefit your cat but help strengthen your bond together!

It’s Offically Check the Chip Day!
It takes only seconds and can make the difference between being reunited with a lost pet and wondering what happened to them. This includes making sure the microchip is even registered and the information is still accurate!
Little Maki Squeezing into a Box
Have you ever wondered why cats like squeezing into boxes?
That Amazon box your new cat bed just came in might be seen as the perfect napping spot to your kitty. Most domestic cats have the instinct to retreat/hide in the event of a stressful situation such as you pulling out their carrier to come visit the vet. Here are a list of reasons your kitty might love that extra boss so much!
📦 They can't be snuck up on in an enclosed space
📦 Cardboard is great at keeping the heat
📦 Cardboard is a fun texture to chew and scratch
📦 It can help them adapt to their environment faster
📦 Cats are simply curious.
Whatever the reason, your kitty might appreciate you letting that Amazon sit out a few days longer.

Keep your pets out of the trash and medicine cabinets!
Many things in the household can be toxic to your pet! Here are a few uncommon household toxins to watch out for:
❌Albuterol inhalers - inhalers often contain beta-agonist drugs and/or steroids. Since inhalers contain many doses, if your pet chews and punctures it, this can cause severe and acute poisoning. Signs to watch for are vomiting, agitation, extremely high heart rate, collapse, weakness, and sometimes death.
❌Aloe vera - this can cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and rarely, tremors.
❌Bread dough - unbaked bread dough can be dangerous since it expands in the warm, moist environment of the stomach. This can cause bloat and a distended abdomen. When the yeast ferments, it creates carbon dioxide and alcohol. This alcohol then goes into the blood stream and can cause alcohol poisoning. Alcohol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar (hypoglycemia), blood pressure (hypotension), and body temperature (hypothermia). Severely intoxicated animals can experience seizures and respiratory failure.
❌Moldy food - as we all know, dogs LOVE garbage. Tremorgenic mycotoxins can be found in moldy bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter such as compost. Most common signs of mycotoxin ingestion are vomiting, agitation, tremors, seizures, elevated body temperature, and difficulty walking/standing.
Happy Friday!
