🐶 Woof woof, cough cough… let’s talk Bordetella!🐾
💉 The Bordetella vaccine is an annual vaccination given to prevent kennel cough, a respiratory disease, in dogs. Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common bacterial agent responsible for kennel cough🦠- it causes inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, leading to coughing, illness, and possibly secondary infection(s). The term “kennel cough” actually encompasses a multitude of highly-contagious respiratory illnesses caused by other germs, too; these include canine adenovirus type 2, canine respiratory coronavirus, canine parainfluenza virus, mycoplasma, and more.
Even though Bordetella is considered a non-core vaccine, it is still recommended for dogs of all ages/sizes/lifestyles, due to the protection it provides. It is also required by most groomers and boarding facilities since dogs come in close contact with one another there.
Fun fact time! Bordetella can survive for up to 48 hours out in the environment. So, if your dog goes in areas where other dogs also go, such as dog parks, they should receive the Bordetella vaccine for extra protection.
