Zach was a lab and my families last "full breed Labrador retriever". I grew up with ONLY working dogs in a home in MN on 5 acres of land. Our dogs were working dogs first and secondly they were pets. Zach was the ONLY lab that I would consider exceptional as both a bird dog AND pet dog. Oddly, Zach had the least formal training out of all of our working labs. He was born with the gift of just knowing how to be a bird dog (great sniffer) with a soft mouth and instant recall. His occupational enrichment needs were always met!

Occupational enrichment! 🐶🤩Understanding your dog is MORE than just knowing their breed. It's about diving deep into their unique characteristics and behaviors. 🤔 EACH DOG is a world of its own, and breed groups give us a GENERAL idea, but looking at the INDIVIDUAL dog is where the real magic happens. 🤩

Your dog will thank you when they are allowed an outlet for in which they were originally bred for! They often times have more needs than just being your best friend and you have to consider their needs to be a happy dog living in a human world.

Here are some very basic ideas to expand on and explore. You might have to make special trips to get these boxes checked off the list! (get creative):
*Tug toy games *scented dummy's *Retrieving games *Scent games *Herding games (Sheepballs by Kay Laurence, Treibball) *Chasing games

Poodles: bird hunting/water fowl.
Golden retriever: gun dog/bird dog/field trials (more land dog)

🎃Squashy🎃

First and foremost Meeka and Astros medium (with a few mini) multigen goldendoodles are absolutely stunning!!!🤩 Wowza!!!

I am just finishing up first observations and first look at who these puppies might be.❤️

We will do a second set of observations 5 days into weaning and then a final evaluation will follow.

Squashy has been a pretty great student so far! He has done very well with handling and he is so easy to take pictures of! Whoever chooses this guy is going to be one lucky family!😍

Appa is one of our school facility dogs and he comes from our Rosey and Astro litter. He is such a lucky dood he gets amazing social enrichment on a weekly basis!

Social enrichment: 🐾 Today, I wanted to share a little something about social enrichment for our furry friends. Social enrichment is not just a buzzword—it's a vital aspect of a dog's life that encompasses engaging with other dogs, different species of animals, and, of course, us humans. 🐶🐾

It's essential to remember that a dog's need for social interaction doesn't fade as they grow older. Unlike socialization, which is crucial during puppyhood, social enrichment is a lifelong process. 🌟 Ensuring our pups have regular opportunities to interact with a variety of beings keeps them happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated. 💬❤️ 🐕🦴💞

Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
*BUILD STRONG BONDS with your furry friend through relationship-building exercises with both people in your home and out! 🐾💖 This is so incredibly important and one of the first activities to work on the second you bring your new puppy home.
*Create POSITIVE associations with trainers, vets, and other pet professionals to help ensure your pup gets the best care and interactions. 🐕👩‍⚕️

Little Miss Ginger is demonstrating a more advanced sensory enrichment activity here with her owner and trainer! This is definitely not an enrichment that you should expect your puppy to enjoy as a first activity. Ginger has already put in a lot of work and her trainer is with her owner to help navigate this activity. They are closely monitoring Ginger for any fear, anxiety or stress. I'm happy to say it sounds like she nailed this enrichment exercise flawlessly.😊

The activity here: Ginger and her owner are sitting next to a very busy and loud street with many different and more advanced sounds, sights and smells.

Yes, sensory enrichment can be this easy! Remember no matter what your dogs age is you should start with very easy and basic enrichment activities (at home in their safe zone) and then work up as they master each activity.

Sensory enrichment is used to stimulate different senses of your puppy/dog. Which can include taste, smell, sight sound and touch.

Please note: I do recommend working with a trainer when introducing sensory enrichment. Especially if you're newer to training. A trainer will help you learn to watch body language so that your puppy or dog isn't experiencing any fear, anxiety or stress during enrichment. If enrichment (especially out in a public) is not done properly it could actually cause negative associations with being out and away from home.

Please send a prayer for Skye she was attacked by 3 large dogs this morning.❤️‍🩹 Skye is at the vet now getting care and I'm praying hard she can make a full recovery. Skye is a past puppy and came from our "Apple" litter. 🙏🏽

Part 2! 1 type of enrichment:

One way to provide your pup with enrichment after go home is through food or nutrition!

In one of my last emails I write to keep a bit of kibble put aside so that throughout the day your pup has the chance to "work" for it! This doesn't mean this task needs to be difficult or overly time consuming. However take a few minutes to hand feed, practice a simple command(that they already know), ask for a "sit", or anything simple and turn this into a little game to play! When you do these fun little activities this will also help to build a stronger bond with your pup!

A few other ideas:
*make up your own game or make a treat toy activity. You can even make a fun game out of a towel by rolling treats/frozen veggies/ or kibble in it you can look up ideas online too.(make sure it's supervised if your use an object that could be ingested)
*dog puzzle/ buying treat hiding games (make sure you start simple so your not causing your pup/dog any frustration, anxiety or stress. There are so many fun games to buy on Amazon! You can also play a little game of hide and seek with a kong as more of an advanced scenting activity to help provide nutritional enrichment!

As well as many more ideas online!☺️

Exciting times ahead! 🐾 We are thrilled to be evaluating puppies for two amazing families, placing them in crucial working roles. 🐶✨

It's been awhile since I've done any informational posts because even though they can be informative they are not super exciting to read unless you have a serious interest in training. But now with having 2 families I'm evaluating for it's time to get back to talking about advanced training after go home. If you want some things to think about prior to taking your new puppy home keep an eye out for my posts over the next few weeks. If not just look at the cute puppy pictures.☺️

Part 1 ENRICHMENT:
Before your puppy goes home I provide a TON of enrichment through my puppy curriculum. Enrichment should be a part of your puppy plan after go home.

Enrichment should provide stimulating environments for your puppy/dog to demonstrate their species-typical behavior. Your dog should be allowed to be a DOG on a daily basis! (I think this is easy to forget).
Enrichment also allows them control or choice over their environment, which in turn can enhance their life and or wellbeing. When a puppy goes into a service roll or therapy roll they should still get time to just be a dog.
Enrichment can help strengthen the human dog bond, it can help reduce boredom and provide suitable outlets to help reduce unwanted behaviors. Also, pretty obviously provides both mental and physical exercise:)

A little peek at the pumpkin patch puppies with almost all of their eyes open! A few caught my eye this morning! It's hard to have a favorite when they are all so pretty. So this is going to be a great litter to choose off of temperament.

I'm feeling excited to meet our fall babies and so glad that we have been in our home for a few months now. It will be way less chaotic with the fall litters. I'm glad to be fully set up and have my routine down!
