Enrichment has become a huge buzz word in the dog world, but what does it really mean?
Enrichment, simply put, is best defined as a way to improve overall quality of life.
For our canine friends, these interests can vary, but there are several types of enrichment you can try to see what suits your dog best!
Some categories and examples are…
🐾 visual
doggie tv, car rides, window watching
🐾 auditory
calming music, dog podcasts
🐾 food based
food dispensing toys, edible chews, food in cardboard boxes
🐾 physical
toy play, dog led obstacle courses
🐾 environmental
surface changes, DIY tunnels and forts, visiting a new place
🐾 olfactory
nosework, freedom to sniff on walks
🐾 cognitive
training games, dog sports
So, with so many options, how do you choose? Here are some things to consider…
Is my dog enjoying this activity?
Remember, to enhance a dog’s quality of life, we don’t want to see signs of fear, frustration, or stress.
Is it safe?
Some dogs love destroying cardboard to eat their meals, but are at risk of ingesting it. A different activity may be a better choice for them.
If you’re looking to meet your dog’s needs and improve their lives, try some new activities and find some they like!
