Looking to rehome for someone else a retired female. She is 9 years old, she is solid black and was imported from Germany as a puppy. She is social and good with people including elderly, kids and animals but doesn’t do well with small dogs. She’s been around livestock and cats as well and does great. She is crate trained and good in the house when supervised. She is free to the right home but I will thoroughly vet you and will require references. She’s located in Gillette, Wy! PM me if interested.

Our gorgeous Abbi goes in for her OFA’s this Friday. Cross your fingers we have some beautiful rads. 🤞🏻🙏🏻 Pending her OFA evaluations we are planning on pairing her with Cronus on her next heat this winter. Both Abbi and Cronus are the best family dogs and are exactly what we are striving to produce. They both have solid temperaments, great conformation, medium drives, have plenty of energy but with the proper exercise/stimulation they can easily settle down and relax in the house. Their puppies should be amazing. ❤️

We feed our puppies and recommend NutriSource Large Breed Puppy. We get it from our local Menards or Bomgaars. We realize not everyone has a budget for this food so here are a few other options to fit everyone’s needs. Just make sure whatever brand you decide to go with you get the large breed formula. Yes you can feed regular puppy food or an all life stages food but you have to be careful about how much you feed (remember we don’t want large breed puppies growing too fast) so this is why we recommend to our puppy buyers to get a large breed formula. Also, if you are having trouble finding your food because it’s out of stock locally I encourage you to order it online from Chewy.com and you can even put it on auto ship so you never run out. You cannot get NutriSource at Chewy but they do sell it online at PetFlow.

Sharing from my friends page…I can’t stress enough on how much environmental factors play such a huge role in your dog’s overall health. I think the most common “myth” I hear is that you need to feed a puppy free choice puppy food! Please DO NOT do this….especially in large breeds. Follow the recommendations on the brand of food your feeding and adjust accordingly. German Shepherds often have a good “food drive” and will over eat quickly, therefor growing too fast and wrecking havoc on their joints!

The environment a dog lives in is a huge factor in early deaths and illnesses such as hip dysplasia. While I believe hip certification is extremely important in reducing the prevalence of hip dysplasia (HD), it's not even half the picture. A dog kept in a "good" environment is much less likely to hip dysplasia even if they are more prone to it. Avoiding high impact exercise in young puppies, slippery surfaces, and keeping your dog lean will go so much farther to keep your dog healthy.

Always ask your vet about your dogs weight if you are unsure and err on the side of caution. It's easy to think that we are being kind to our dogs by letting them be even just a couple pounds overweight, but the research shows even just a few extra pounds can have big impacts on their health.

I don't like most graphics as they are not detailed enough but here is one that explains more in depth how to assess the body condition of your dog. It's more than if you can see ribs or not and I personally feel seeing ribs is not always a good indicator that a dog is too skinny. It's important to put your hands on the dog and to take into account the whole body, including the pelvis, spine, ribs, shoulders, and head. The amount of muscle (not to be confused with fat!) and coat condition are also very important in knowing if your dog is getting enough nutrition. Dog's who are underfed cannot build muscle. Below I've linked two summaries of a couple well known studies that show just how important a restricted diet is for our dogs. It's for this reason that I do not recommend free feeding.

I thought this would be worth a share!!! This article is about the FRONT dew claws so please do not mistake it for the REAR dew claws. Do not remove your GS puppies front dew claws, it will have detrimental effects on your dog. On the rare occasion I have puppies born with hind dews we remove them at birth and they are usually just attached by skin.

Do the Dew(claws)?

M. Christine Zink DVM, PhD, DACVSMR

I am a vet that works exclusively with performance dogs, developing rehabilitation programs for injured dogs or dogs that have had surgery as a result of performance-related
injuries. I have seen many dogs now, especially field trial/hunt test and agility dogs, that have had chronic carpal arthritis, frequently so severe that they have to be retired or at least carefully managed for the rest of their careers. Of the over 30 dogs I have seen with carpal arthritis, only one has had dewclaws. The others have all had them removed.

If you look at an anatomy book (Miller’s Guide to the Anatomy of Dogs is an excellent one – see figure below) you will see that there are 5 tendons attached to the dewclaw. Of course, at the other end of a tendon is a muscle, and that means that if you cut off the dew claws, there are 5 muscle bundles that will become atrophied from disuse.

Those muscles indicate that the dewclaws have a function. That function is to prevent torque on the leg. Each time the foot lands on the ground, particularly when the dog is cantering or galloping, the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog then needs to turn, the dewclaw digs into the ground to support the lower leg and prevent torque. If the dog doesn’t have a dewclaw, the leg twists. A lifetime of that and the result can be carpal arthritis. Remember: the dog is doing the activity regardless, and the pressures on the leg have to go somewhere.

They can be absorbed by the dewclaw, or they will move up and down the leg to the toes, carpus, elbow, and shoulders.
Perhaps you are thinking, “I never have had one of my dogs have carpal pain or arthritis.” Well, we need to remember that dogs, by their very nature, do not tell us about mild to moderate pain. If a dog was to be asked by an emergency room nurse to give the level of his pain on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst, their scale would be 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Most of our dogs, especially if they deal with pain that is of gradual onset, just deal with it and don’t complain unless it is excruciating. But when I palpate the carpal joints of older dogs without dewclaws, I almost always elicit pain with relatively minimal manipulation.

As to the possibility of injuries to dew claws. Most veterinarians will say that such injuries actually are not very common at all. And if they do occur, then they are dealt with like any other injury. In my opinion, it is far better to deal with an injury than to cut the dew claws off of all dogs “just in case.”

Just a friendly reminder to new puppy owners, please please please do not take your puppy out and about to highly populated dog areas such as parks, pet stores etc. until they are fully vaccinated for parvo (they need a series of 3 vaccinations.) If you have ever witnessed it, it is a terrible sickness that can kill your puppy. Most of my puppies stay until 10 weeks so they will already have 2 of the 3. If yours left at 8 weeks I don’t mind at all giving them the others just get ahold of me.

Is your dog crate trained?

“My dog did not like the crate”

As dog trainers we hear this all TOO OFTEN!

In the vast majority of cases the above response tells us more about the owner than about the dog. Sorry… truth hurts and we tell it like it is here.

I’ve not met many dogs that “like” a crate until they have been TRAINED to the crate.

I’ve met many OWNERS that did not “like” the crate so… when the dog protested and you lost sleep or could not handle the noise you threw in the towel and blamed the dog. 🤷‍♂️

Sure there are a percentage of dogs that are truly crate terrors that professional help may be needed but that is a very small percentage.

The rest of y’all just gave up because it was noisy and you felt bad. When your feelings get in the way you simply reinforce the dogs loud protests by letting them out. Dog wins… for now but in the long term likely loses in many ways possibly with its life.

Nobody ever said raising a dog was easy. If you need help ask a professional.
