Huge thank you to Pete's 906 Auto Salvage for allowing us to use the salvage yard for part of our group training today with some of the UPs K9 teams!

We are always looking to add more places and buildings into our training rotation to change up the scenery for the dogs. If you have any buildings or places we could use for training to help keep the dogs sharp and ready to serve our communities, please let us know!

It’s important to keep K9’s canines pearly white and in good health. Here are some tips on pet dental health!

Smile and say cheese! Happy Monday! Nuke stoping in to inform you it’s Pet Dental Health Month!🦷🐾

What are some things you should know in regards to pet dental health:
🦷Regular teeth brushes are important! Not only does it improve dental health, but can improve overall pet health as well and save you money down the road.
🦷Bad breath is not normal, if your pets breath stinks it can indicate poor dental health.
🦷If dental disease is left untreated, it can cause damage to organs throughout your dogs body.
🦷Start at a young age to get you pup comfortable getting their teeth brushed. If you have an adult dog take it slow with baby steps to ease into a full mouth brushing. There are tools available to help with this such as dental chews and flavored dog friendly toothpastes.
🦷Be established with a veterinarian to get regular check ups and recommendations.

UP K9 group training days are some of our favorite days 🐾 Hoping to get a shot of all the group in the near future, but even with this amount it was no easy task, especially in the cold.
The aspect of group training is SO valuable and important. It’s a time for networking, practicing skills, training real life scenarios, and sharing K9 related work and home life experiences. It’s how we grow as teams and handlers. We get better by training together!

It’s kind of surreal to look at this photo and consider our mindset half a decade ago, when we met K9s for the first time. We would have thought about it the same way most of society would probably view it: “Oh, look. That dog is laying down and smelling something.”

Today, we took the time to really consider the backstory to this image.

Here’s a dog that’s been bred to have the genetic ability to focus, detect, search, keep searching, and search even more. A dog that has the disposition to work alongside a human partner, both in the public and in high-intensity situations. Training to learn to identify over a dozen scents. Training to learn how to communicate a find to his handler, through body language. Training to learn not to touch the source of the odor. Training to learn how to detect and source an odor inside, outside, in the open, hidden in object, or in a car. Desensitization to become comfortable with varying surfaces, tight space, loud noises, distracting smells, other dogs, and other people. Building focus to maintain body position until his handler rewards him or calls him off. Daily training to keep up all of his skill sets. Weekly training scenarios to present new situations to ensure future comfortability. Daily exercise and activity to maintain muscle and stamina to keep working long events and back-to-back shifts. Constant socialization to make sure he’s comfortable around the public, to provide education and participate in demonstrations.

Demos are such an awesome way to educate the community on canines and we love to do them!🐾

Nuke and I had a blast this afternoon being apart of Menominee County Sheriff's Office K9 demos with K9jace and K9 Kado for Peninsula Federal Credit Union today! Thanks for having us! We love to get out there to help educate on the importance and the workings of k9s! 💙🐾 Nuke also enjoys getting to be a show off 😂
