There are so many opinions and common misconceptions about the "best" way to socialize a puppy, especially a service dog prospect.

It is important to know there is no way to guarantee any dog will be a public access fit service dog, especially not from puppyhood! The important things to focus on are:
1️⃣confidence building age appropriate socialization
2️⃣building confidence and neutrality over obedience
3️⃣tailoring outings to fit your puppy's needs

I often see a lot of debate about whether or not a service dog is required to be on leash or not in the United States. The ADA, which is what gives service dog teams the right to public access, states that service dogs should be on leash unless performing a task that interferes with this.

So, yes, if your dog is actively performing a task they may need to be off leash for a period of time, and yes your dog should remain under control, but to keep the public, businesses, and yourself protected, they should be on leash all other times when in non-pet friendly areas.

We took on a USCSS trial today and the dogs were all super stars! Cheddar got her novice exterior title and qualified in several intermediate classes with lots of ribbons with . Chai got her novice exterior title and advanced containers title, winning a few classes along the way! Astro tagged along for some training and moral support and was the best boy, earning himself a toy that was a gift to the volunteers (he was the best one clearly…)

Thanks to for putting on a great trial, we always have the best time on scent trial days!

🐕‍🦺Figuring out if a dog is a suitable prospect of service work can be daunting and feel unknowable at times, and that's because it often is!

🐕‍🦺It is impossible to know whether a dog will be fit for public access work from any one test or evaluation, but rather is often from a collection of observations of behavior, confidence, and reliability over time.

🐕‍🦺All service dog prospects should have the following baseline traits before being considered to start training!

🐕‍🦺If you need help with the process of picking a prospect, DM us for more information on how we can help!

Ever wonder why it takes just the right dog to be a service dog ⬇️

It is often because public access work is challenging for both dogs and handlers and it takes the right dog, and match, to do successfully, happily, and long term.

Feeling unsure if your service dog in training is ready to start public access training in non-pet friendly stores?

Here are a few skills they need before you start:
🐾 Being neutral and relaxed in pet friendly locations so that they
can reliably focus on you

🐾 Loose leash walking past and around distractions, including but
not limited to different people, animals, scents, and underfootings

🐾Reliable stay (and additional obedience) around distractions

🐾The ability to settle during pauses

🐕‍🦺Astro is 9 months old and I am enjoying every moment with him! He is a goofy, snuggling, very willing pup that is working and playing hard! He enjoys lots of cuddles, zooming, and enrichment and is doing very well with his obedience, low blood sugar alerts, and public access behaviors.

🐕‍🦺He is continuing to work on choosing to settle on the house with the other dogs loose, auto leave its, and taking treats calmly even when exciting things are happening!

🐕‍🦺Over the next month we will be increasing duration and distraction for obedience and public access, and continuing to work on his skills!
