Let’s talk about nails!

Dogs outer nail shells are made of keratin, just like ours, so they’re continually growing. When they are long enough to touch the floor that puts a lot of pressure on the toe joints causing discomfort and pain. With continual pressure, it can alter their posture while standing and even causing the joint to be realigned. Sometimes the toes can look splayed out or start growing sideways.

Nail health is a big part of pain control in dogs. The blood supply (called the quick) has a lot of nerves and sensation, which the outer shell protects. It’s very painful for a dog to experience a broken nail exposing that quick.

As Moose ages, I know he has arthritis in his paws and isn’t a fan when I dremel his nails. I try to stay on top of keeping his nails shorter, but sometimes I miss a few weeks here and there. When I dremel his nails and there is a noticeable difference in his gait showing me that he’s less painful with shorter nails.

If you have trouble trimming your dog’s nails or need help learning let me know! We are not only a rehab department, but the best part is we’re connected to a vet clinic (aka we do nail trims every minute of every day!).

Sometimes our own pets need some therapy! My dog Moose is an older boy who has some arthritic hips and can get a sore lower back. I use photobiomodulation to help decrease any chronic inflammation caused by arthritis to keep him more mobile!

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy occurs when a dose of light energy reaches target tissue and results in decreased inflammation, decreased pain, and accelerated healing. (https://www.companionanimalhealth.com/page/laser-therapy)
