On , we're sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips - such as:

➑ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➑ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember - while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

Canine Respiratory Disease Outbreak:

Dear GMVH Pet Families,

I hope you and your beloved pet family are enjoying summer! It's a great time to relax and enjoy some quality time with your animals at home. With travel being common this time of year as well, it's also vital to stay abreast of any major infectious disease developments in our area, which is why I am reaching out.

The DE Agriculture Department released an important disease outbreak notification on Canine Respiratory Disease. See attachment. It is felt that multiple pathogens are playing a role, all of which are blanketed under the term, Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC). Symptoms linked to the disease:

Lethargy
Inappetence
Fever
Clear or Colored (Yellow/Green) Nasal or Ocular Discharge
Coughing
Vomiting
Difficulty Breathing
* Life Threatening in some cases

Ultimately, our hospital has seen waves of respiratory illnesses (mild-severe) over the years and we always encourage owners to consider the Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccines if boarding and/or if your dog goes places where there are many other dogs interacting and/or sharing space. Much like in human medicine, disease can spread from asymptomatic carriers. Ultimately, if a dog develops symptoms of concern, the pet should be evaluated, tested for multiple infectious pathogens, and treated accordingly. Dogs showing any signs of respiratory disease should always be considered as contagious and as a potential spreader of disease.

Please contact Glen Mills Veterinary Hospital if you have questions or concerns regarding the latest in local CIRDC and your beloved dog at home. Dogs needing an appointment at our hospital will be given instructions on when to enter the building for their assessment and will need to follow our infectious disease protocols in efforts to keep the canine community as safe as possible!

Kind regards,

Dr. Michelle Parker-Longo
