RATTERY UPDATE: I currently have everything on-hold. While we typically have 200-900 rats at any given time. We purposely slowed breeding, and sold out most of our rats. I retired all previous breeders, and introduced new ones. I have about 30 breeders in rotation to start new breeding groups. They have already had about 70 pups. More due anyday. Those females will be raised and mixed with males from other litters to create additional breeding groups. So while I work the back-end stuff to keep producing healthy rats, and start new breeding groups I will be putting all sales on-hold. Thank you.

So as some may know the Rattery has been undergoing renovations and moving to a larger area. So here at 2am as I am out here feeding/watering the rats in the chaos, I walk over to their area which is straightened up and situated, and whom do I see? None other than the illusive Luna. For those of you that don’t know Luna is the the only daughter of my eldest rat (Louie) that passed away some months back. During a cage change Luna bolted and has made sure not to get caught. Meanwhile she just chills out in the Rattery and does her own thing, goes where she pleases, but never goes out of the Rattery. (Thank God, because my cats are excellent mousers). Usually she is like a ghost, and on rare occasions you will see her. Tonight was one of those nights.

So this lady is feeding her own six pups, and just became adopted mom to 7 others that are just a little smaller than hers. I had one little mischief that thought the two females and male were suppose to have them as snacks. They just kept biting throats. They got 5 of them before I could remove them. The surviving 7 went to a proven mama that has taken good care of her pups in hopes she would adopt them. She spazzed for a few minutes after I put them in. She moved her babies. Then moves them in the pile with hers and immediately went to nursing them. I know they will be feeders as they grow up, but still makes my heart happy to see her take to them like that.

When I started the Rattery, I was just raising rats (other than my pet rats) to feed my snakes. Then I had a couple pet stores ask me about breeding. Then it just escalated from there. I will tell you while I really enjoy working a Rattery. It is very time consuming and ALOT of work to maintain.

So these babies and a couple other litters got separated tonight. Gotta add them some toys in to play with as a nursery. I have 8 litters not ready to be weeaned yet. 3 new litters today and a number of current pregnancies.
