Today, I remember those who served shoulder-to-shoulder with me on the battlefield—those who bled and sacrificed to improve the lot of others. Some of us came home with visible and invisible wounds that took months and even years to heal. Some wounds will never heal, and they exist like shadows that appear and disappear depending on the time of day. As bad as it may sound, we were lucky. We were fortunate because while some of us came home broken, we came home alive. Others, whom we will never forget, were not so lucky. They came home in a box, and I will never forget them or their families for as long as I live. While my heart is saddened to think of them on this day, I know I will see them again one day. Until that day comes, I honor their sacrifice.
