LewisCo HumaneSociety 501c3 We are a registered 501(c)(3), EIN 16-1511904, humane society. We rehome dogs & cats thru adoption. The humane education bill was sponsored in March of 1917.
(53)

Our mission is to provide care, comfort and kindness to companion animals without homes. The LCHS works towards ending unwanted and abandoned animals through spay/neuter. We strive to ensure the animals in our care are adopted into loving, forever homes by promoting compassionate, responsible pet ownership. The Lewis County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was incorporated on May 7

, 1915. The purpose at that time was the prevention of cruelty to the animals of Lewis County. At the same time, the Lewis County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was also incorporated. Its purpose was the prevention of cruelty to the children of Lewis County. On May 26, 1915, a motion was made to consolidate the two societies, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and that consolidated society be known as The Lewis County Humane Society. The main purpose of the Society remained as the prevention of cruelty along with the support of humane education in the schools. The Lewis County Humane Society currently owns and operates a no kill shelter in the town of Watson in Lewis County, New York. That shelter is contracted with the townships in Lewis County to house dogs brought in from the townships by the dog control officers. The shelter also houses homeless cats from the county.

My foster baby Rink is still waiting for a home. I literally drive myself crazy thinking about any of my fosters having to wait at the shelter for a home. He's a little fighter and so full of s***k. Rink was found as a stray on fort drum and was pretty sickly. He had to be bottle fed until his upper respiratory got better so he could eat on his own. I think he's overlooked because he's not the type to go running up to you for attention but loves it when he gets it! I mean I was his mom so may have picked up some of my antisocial habits.. 🤷 (you can't win em all lol). Rink gets along with dogs and other kitties, he probably wouldn't like young children picking him up much though.. I mean I don't really blame him honestly. Someone needs to come adopt this boy so I can live in peace (that is until more of my fosters become available) 😭.... I'm telling you, your cat needs a friend and Rink is it!!!! Message the shelter Lewis County Humane Society NY 501c3 if you are interested!!!
Enjoy his before and after transformation!!!!

Too adorable not to share!!! This is Scooter (my foster) with his best friend Kadi. I'm sure you have all seen miss Kadi with most of my foster kitten pictures as she adores them all! The feeling is mutual for little Scooter he loves her so much.
He does have eye removal surgery on Wednesday and then will hang out with Sue to recover for a bit! I did cover up the eye because it's pretty rough to look at but it doesn't slow him down one bit! He is a riot and always into things, tearing around 🤣.
Little Scooter will be available for adoption soon and would love a home with a doggie companion 😍.

He would really like Rink to get adopted before him as Rink has been waiting for a home and is still currently at the shelter .. waiting 🥺

**Trigger warning**

On Monday night one of the shelters previous employees, Kelsey, was driving home near rt 342/Black river area. There was a church and a cemetery in very close proximity. She noticed a garbage bag on the side of the road and turned around as she had a bad feeling. When exiting her vehicle she found something absolutely horrifying. A momma dog had been shot and left on top of the garbage bag which was tied up containing her 6 deceased puppies.. 😭. The momma looked doberman in color (blk&brown) with the pointy ears but had a boxier face, the puppies where all brown/blk with a little white on their paws. The police were notified and went to the scene to take them to be properly laid to rest. They are investigating, someone out there has to know something. The puppies were likely a little under 6 weeks old. We need to find this.... 🤬 person ... so they can be held responsible!!! Please share and give us any information you may have!!!!

PLEASE SHARE!!!!

**RINK IS STILL WAITING!!!** 😭😭😭

My little Rink is still waiting to be adopted! He just wants to be everyone's friend and the other cats are picking on him 😭. My heart is broken knowing he hasn't found his forever yet. I always struggle so much with bringing fosters back to the shelter especially when they did so well in my home. I already have 6 cats of my own along with a herd of other animals, I just cannot keep them all. Rink did well with my 2 dogs, 6 cats and 3 other foster kittens. He played rougher with the two but was very gentle with Scooter who needs an eye removal surgery. The shelter is open today 2-6! Please please please get this boy outta the shelter so I can sleep at night without being overwhelmed with guilt... You can fill out an application ahead of time which can be found on lewiscountyhumanesociety.org and then email it to [email protected]!

If you scroll down a few videos you will see Rink when he first arrived... Well look at him now, competing for Gold. I may be biased but I think we have a champion in our midst!
Rink will be available soon so follow Lewis County Humane Society NY 501c3 if you think you can handle such grace and excellence!

When these two are ready I would love for them to find a home together forever!
I currently have 4 fosters but Scooter and Gru tend to stay together and I am so glad for that.

😭.... I gave the kittens some new toys to play with tonight. The three of them went nuts running around having a blast. Then I looked over at poor Scooter... He was standing kinda in the middle of all the commotion not sure of which direction to turn too .. you could tell he knew they were all having so much fun but being blind he wasn't sure what to do next. My heart broke when I saw him slowly walk into his bed and sit with his head down almost sad like he just knew he was "different". But then... Gru must have felt what I was feeling and joined Scooter in his bed and they began to play together.... Not going to lie, I cried 🤣🤷🤦

Follow the new page Lewis County Humane Society NY 501c3 to see when these babies are available. It will be a while yet as they are young and Scooter needs eye removal surgery still as well.

"You will never see the purpose of someone leaving your life until you see what's best for your life." His words make so much sense in my life alone but to the animals in the shelter... I feel like his words are spoken to them. I'm sure they wonder with each person they hear coming into the building whether it's "their person" coming to take them home. When the dogs come in a lot of the time they are frantically searching for their safety net, which was once their family, their people and now are just metal bars closing behind them. I wish I could tell them so they would understand that one day maybe sooner, maybe later, the life they were meant to live will come for them. The memory of the ones they loved once before will fade and there will only be room for the love they will get when they find their purpose, their place, their family.
Buddy and I went on a little adventure to get them all some Arby's, hopefully that made their day just a little brighter ❤️

**Rink is now available for adoption!!!**

Well a 2 1/2 day break in-between fosters is enough... Right? 🤷. This boy definitely needs some major TLC after being found as a stray on drum. He is likely around 8-9 weeks old but weighs what a 3-4 week old kitten does. He's getting fluids, antibiotics and needs to be syringe fed as his URI is so bad he will not eat on his own. Prayers little Rink pulls through ❤️. Follow the new page Lewis County Humane Society NY 501c3 to see any updates for this boy.

Can I just say how lucky this county is for having such wonderful people to take care of the animals in this area!! So Lumi and Cirrus went home today and Blossom is still at the shelter set to be picked up tomorrow. This leaves her the only kitten there right now. Caroline knew I was sad about it and I asked her to give her some extra loving tonight. I just got these pictures sent to me, definitely made me smile to know that they all love the animals like their own. Having such wonderful staff definitely made the transition of leaving the shelter just a little bit easier. Thanks Caroline!!!

Ok people.. my foster mom insanity has struck again... My babies went to the vet today and will head back to the shelter tomorrow to find their new families. 3 of them have homes, 2 do not... Lumi and Cirrus are still without a forever. My husband is a saint we will just say that... Only slight judgment as I cry to him that my kittens now lost another mom... First their real mom who had been hit by a car and now me.... 😭... After endless questioning by me to my darling husband,
1. Do you think they are sad?
2. Do you think they feel like no one wants them?
3. Do you think they are going to be traumatized for life about losing TWO moms in the short 14 weeks of their life?
4. Do you think they know how much I love them?
Dear Lord, fostering is so rewarding but so dang hard at the same time, especially when you know 2 of them will have to stay at the shelter for who knows how long 😭. Lumi and Cirrus are just so loving and adventurous and a tiny bit naughty 🤷. They love dogs and need a together forever home.. Please message the new page messenger (lewis county humane society NY 501c3) Or email an app to [email protected] that can be found on the website (lewiscountyhumanesociety.org) Please someone save my sanity and get these babies adopted!!!

I saw this quote today that said, "Extraordinary in an ordinary environment does not shine and is so often overlooked and undervalued." How true is that statement? Take Coco for example, she is just incredible. She is sweet, full of life and happiness, eager to please and loves her people. In the shelter environment she is "high strung, too much" and overlooked. We know in a home, in a different environment she will be an extraordinary companion for someone. Please consider Coco and remember they are stuck in a kennel 90 percent of their day so of course they are going to seem like "ALOT" at first. Coco is around 1 1/2 years old and does ok with dogs (better meeting off leash though) and no kitties for her.

Two of my fosters still don't have applications. They head to the vet on the 12th and will be ready to head home after. Lumi and Cirrus are so full of personality, literally every part. Cirrus acts like a red panda, every time you walk past him he's up on his back legs with his arms spread waiting to pounce on your foot. Lumi has been extra lovey lately and will throw himself on top of you and just roll all over you for attention. They are both so sweet it's just the best thing after a bad day, you can't help but smile. Lumi also likes to shove his mouth into all of your face holes, your mouth, your nose, your ears.. he's a weirdo 🤣. They both love dogs and other kitties and would love to go home together!!!!! Both males around 11 weeks right now so they will be about 13 weeks when they are ready to go home!

Even though this isn't the normal shelter page anymore, I'm still going to use this platform to promote some of the longer term residents.

This boy is one of the biggest reasons I'm struggling with the fact that I left the shelter. It's been 25 days and honestly the worst 25 days of my life. I've never cried so much .. ever.... 🤦🤷. Anyway. Buddy is going on 2 years (676 days to be exact) since he's been at the shelter. He's had ONE meet and greet that didn't go well... Buddy is, for lack of more flattering terms, kinda an as***le at first 🤷. It happens I guess, maybe that's why we get along so well?. Once you have his heart you will have the best friend you could ever ask for. He can brighten any day with his smile and willingness to please you. Honestly he kinda reminds me of a rainbow without getting too sappy. The beginning is dark and undesirable, then you see the sun shining through, even just a little. In the end you have a rainbow, the moment that makes all that "bad" into something good. You can almost see it when he looks at you or feel it more so I suppose. The feeling of a rainbow... Weird I know, but it's how this boy makes me feel and I love it. I love him.... Please share and help this boy find his place.

Must be an only pet and kids 15+

One Small Furry Friend
by, Merrill O. Fisher

There was in our home, this small furry friend, who didn’t ask to come into our lives, who didn’t require much help or care. Who didn’t cost us anything, but a little food, who only asked for some of our love and attention.

This friend of ours didn’t hurt anyone, by thought or deed – they only tried to please. All of our friend’s life was spent trying to make us happy. They asked so little, but gave so much. Never were they too tired, too hungry, never too sick to show us love. In every way possible, they demonstrated their love – with the tilt of their head, the sparkle in their eye, the wag of their tail, How they waited for us to show them some attention, so they could show us their love. How they lived the Golden Rule!

This friend was one of our family, a most important part of our lives. They are sadly missed, but we are so much better for having shared their life with us. We can think of nothing, and perhaps no one that has better taught us to give and receive love openly, unselfishly and unashamedly, as the One Small Furry Friend.
RIP littlest.... 💔

Regn had to undergo a second surgery for Intussusception today and unfortunately did not make it through recovery... This one hit pretty hard .. I'm sorry little man.

Hi, me again (Amber). Since this page still has quite a few more followers then the new page (don't forget to follow that one Lewis County Humane Society NY 501c3) I figured I would.post my foster babies. The shelter currently has 50+ cats and kittens in foster so it doesn't hurt at this time to try to find homes for them prior to them being available, just so they don't have to sit in the shelter. These babies are 9 weeks old at this time and it will be a few weeks until they are available. You can send in an application via email @ [email protected].
All these babies absolutely LOVE dogs and definitely need a friend to play with so you have to have another pet or you could adopt in pairs ❤️.
They are instant purring machines as soon as you just walk into the same space as them. Cirrus likes to shove his mouth inside your mouth (idk, just his thing I guess). Shine thinks he wants to be an outdoor cat or a basement cat, basically anywhere he's not supposed to be 🤣. Blossom is a little more independent but still loves her snuggle time, she just enjoys playing with her friends. She also really loves her doggie pals. Lumi and Cirrus absolutely love each other so they would be a great pair to adopt together! Littlest (Regn) won't be available for a while. He's struggling to grow, at 9 weeks old the others weigh over 2lbs, this boy is stunted at 15.8 oz. We are trying to figure out why he's so little still, but he's the most dog obsessed one.

My pops made a chicken coop for a last parting raffle. Drawing will be held on my last day, which is May 31st! Let's make it a good one! I will give him some credit (don't tell him I'm doing so 🤣), but I have a coop he made for me and a tree fell on it and it's still going strong! Tickets will be $20 each or 3 for $50! Your chickens will lay eggs like never before with this new home!
You can also make payments via PayPal at [email protected]!

I swear it's just never ending. One of the puppies who came in recently (who went immediately into foster) tested positive for parvo tonight and now another is showing symptoms. Marley is currently at the vets to start treatment and the other will be going also. Between parvo treatment, a cat we took in a few days ago having an emergency C-section, Dribble and his broken jaw and Zilla with her prolapse..... 😥🥺.... We are always eager to help the ones who need it most but man it would be nice to just.... Catch a break. If anyone would like to donate to help with the cost of some of this we would greatly appreciate it.

To say this boy is lucky is an understatement. Grizz had been running for MONTHS, staying in the same area but would not let anyone get within 100 yards from him without bolting, he was terrified. A few weeks ago Grizz was seen with a wound on his neck, we were determined to save this boy. Jay built another trap that he would feel more comfortable entering. Him and Cheryl spent countless hours checking the trap, restocking food, just so much heart invested in him. All the hard work paid off and Saturday Grizz was officially safe with us. We headed straight to Countryside where Dr. Kenyon did an amazing job fixing this boy all up! Grizz had been shot in the neck 🥺 but luckily he survived! So lucky probably isn't even the right word for him!

Today we lost one of Leyna's puppies. Fine one second then gone the next. In order to understand what happened, to be sure it was nothing that could affect the other babies and that we didn't make any mistakes we had a necropsy done at the vets office. It was found that this baby had an atrial septal defect. Should the heart fail to form properly in an animal embryo, a break in the wall separating two of the chambers of the heart may remain open. In the case of atrial septal defects (ASDs), the resulting "hole in the heart" occurs between the right and left atriums, both of which are instrumental in pumping blood into the lungs and the rest of the body. This baby did not suffer.... We are sorry little guy 💖. Hopefully you get to meet Ford who was one of momma Lunas puppies we lost.

This is the old page that we have A LOT of problems with which was set up pre everyone who works here including the board. This page has no admin and we do not have the passwords to anything and tried for over a year to contact Facebook and get it so we could controll the page. We did not have any luck which is why we made a new page in the first place.... myself, Caroline and Miranda are the only ones with access to the page and because we are not admins we cannot give anyone else access to this page.... So no, no drama involved, sniff it out somewhere else....

I am ready to announce that I (Amber) have resigned from my position as shelter manager at the end of this month. This job has been so rewarding and so heartbreaking at the same time. It's time for a change, and some much needed positivity so maybe someday I can do this work again! I will continue to volunteer and help in any way I can. I really hope all of you will continue to support the shelter and whomever they choose to fill my position. Thank you ❤️❤️‍🩹
