Our farm's roots run deep, stretching back 165 years. Nestled along the picturesque Woodpecker Trail route, our 300-acre farm boasts a legacy spanning six generations in Long Leaf Pine forestation. A Legacy of Innovation:
In 2015, proprietors Tracy (sixth generation) and Curtis Poling introduced a new chapter by establishing our 9,000-olive tree orchard. Our exclusive Woodpecker Trail Olive Farm EVOO is born from Arbequina olives nurtured in our Georgia groves. We ensure the olives are cold pressed immediately after harvest, capturing the essence of freshness in every bottle. Join the Journey:
Indulge in the distinct taste and character of our EVOO, a testament to our devotion and the bounties of nature. We invite you to savor each drop and embrace the remarkable story of Woodpecker Trail Olive Farm. Warmly,

The upcoming cold snap has sparked concerns about the hardiness of olive trees. A key factor in an olive tree's ability to withstand cold lies in its variety, as different cultivars vary in their resilience to prolonged low temperatures. For example, the Arbequina olive tree, grown here at our farm, is celebrated for its exceptional cold tolerance, capable of enduring temperatures as low as 15°F (-9°C).

Georgia’s Zone 9a (ours) offers ideal conditions for olive cultivation, with certain areas—particularly coastal regions in Zones 8b to 9a-providing a supportive environment for olive trees to thrive. Many of the trees at our farm boast a rich history, some tracing their lineage back to the Aix-en-Provence region of France. The Greeks first introduced olive trees to Provence around 600 BC, and the Romans later expanded their cultivation. One standout variety is the Salonenque, often referred to as the "North Pole of the olive-growing region" for its impressive hardiness. Locally, it has earned the nickname "Thomas Jefferson tree," as shown here.

At Woodpecker Trail Olive Farm , our olive trees flourish in a harmonious blend of favorable climate and rich soil. We look forward to welcoming you to see it all firsthand!

Mike p.: The EVOO was purchased to give to my northern relatives as an authentic GA homegrown gift. It was perfect! Several of my kin folk are farmers and they greatly appreciated the gift.

Winter maintenance in the grove today with some old-fashioned drag harrowing. This simple technique boosts soil aeration and water infiltration, promoting healthier tree growth and potentially better yields. It’s great for managing weeds, reducing pests, and eliminating the need for chemical herbicides—making for more sustainable grove care. Sharing a few pics of the grove from atop my UTV. And no, don’t tell Tracy! :)

As I strolled through the grove, I noticed Usnea, or "Old Man’s Beard," clinging to some of the branches. It’s especially noticeable during the winter months if present. This lichen will not grow in polluted areas, as it thrives only where the air is pure and free from contaminants.

Usnea is more than a natural ornament for olive groves—it’s a symbol of environmental health. Its presence indicates clean air, essential for the thriving growth of olive trees and the production of quality fruit. Furthermore, Usnea may offer additional benefits, such as potential antimicrobial properties that could help manage pests and diseases, though more research is needed in this area.

As a herbal remedy, Usnea has been widely studied for its antibiotic and antimicrobial properties. It has proven effective in treating infections and preventing their recurrence through its antiproliferative action.

Key Benefits of Usnea for Olive Groves:
Air Quality Indicator: Usnea’s presence signals a clean-air environment, crucial for robust plant growth.
Potential Pest Control: Early studies suggest that Usnea’s antimicrobial properties might help combat pests and diseases affecting olive trees.
To live in a region where Usnea thrives is to experience the gift of clean air and vibrant nature—a true blessing to cherish.

More exciting health benefits of daily us of EVOO. Want to be sharp? The study, published in Gut Microbes Reports, found that the bacterial changes associated with the EVOO led to improved cognitive performance. EVOO helps prevent Colon Cancer: Amazing more good news on using a quality EVOO. The researchers compared the effect on gut microbiota of high fat diets where the fat consumed was either extra virgin olive oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil. Extra virgin olive oil is primarily monounsaturated fat, sunflower oil is mostly polyunsaturated fat and coconut oil is primarily saturated fat.

The study found that extra virgin olive oil primarily caused bacterial changes that can be associated with the prevention of colorectal cancer while coconut and sunflower oil primarily produced changes that are associated with an increase in CRC risk.

Olive oil was shown to reduce risk while coconut and sunflower were found to increase risk. read on
