Taco Tuesday fundraiser next Tuesday for Friends Of Glenpool Shelter

📣Save the date- April 15th!!! I know it's tax day, but it's also "Taco Tuesday"! 🌮Let's plan to go have a great meal at Speedys Mexican Grill 14797 S. Casper in Glenpool and help out Friends Of Glenpool Shelter at the same time. Friends Of Glenpool Shelter, (FOGS), is an unpaid volunteer 501(c)3 that benefits the Glenpool Animal Control & Shelter. You don't have to have tacos, have what you like from Speedy's extensive menu. Dine inside or outside, curbside pick up, or team up with a delivery service, it's a win-win, and those furry friends at the shelter will thank you!

LET'S TALK BUNS! 🤔
...Bunnies, that is! 🐰

Last month, we took in 57 cottontail babies. So far this week, we’ve taken in 37…so it seems like the perfect time to talk buns!

When we hear the words 'Rabbit Hole', we often think of the metaphor of falling deeper and deeper into something engrossing or time consuming. Which goes along with Alice in Wonderland falling down a deep rabbit hole. Yes, there are rabbits who have intricate tunneling systems going down 10 feet...but here in Oklahoma, our Eastern Cottontails build more of what could be described as a shallow divot of maybe 5 inches deep.

These divots will appear like dead grass (if dug in the grass and as seen in this photo) and will be lined with fur that the mom bunny pulls from her chest to line the nursery. They'll also dig nests in flower beds, etc.

Mom bunny literally hovers over this shallow hole to feed her babies. She's very quick and secretive about it, only doing so twice a day in the cover of dawn and dusk. Otherwise, she stays away from the nest as a way to protect her babies. She doesn't want to attract predators to them. So if you say...'we don't see mom'...we think 'yay! She's doing a good job!'

The babies are also scentless for their protection from predators. Yes, the biggest problem for these babies is cats and dogs getting into nests...but it's not by following their noses.

🐰HOW CAN YOU DO THE RIGHT THING TO HELP BUNNIES?! 🐰

✔️1. Protect that nest from your pets! This photo shows the nest covered with a wheelbarrow...but get creative!...anything that you can use as a barricade to keep pets away but let mom bunny get to the nest.

✔️2. Do a walk thru before mowing/weed eating. As you can image, with a nest that shallow, yard work injuries are the second highest reason that buns land in rehab.

These little ones only spend around 3 weeks in the nest then they're off into the world! But that time with their mom is most important. Not only does mom know best...but these babies don't have the highest survival rate in rehab. As a high prey species, they can literally die of a heart attack from just being in captivity. They also have the most delicate digestive systems out there.

So let's do the right thing…
🐰Protect those buns
🐰Put them back in the nest
🐰Leave them alone so mom can do her job!
🐰Pat yourself on the back for a job well done!
