Jinx is such sweet girl! I swear puppies are so hard, and training puppies is even harder. It seems like it takes ages to make progress and then you turn around and feel like you've ended up 10 steps back instead of 10 steps towards.

But then one day it's as if a switch is flipped and suddenly you have a maturing, intelligent, trained dog and all that unrealized progress has materialized 10 fold. I think Jinx and I are finally glimpsing that 🥰. Always a lesson to be patient and just let the dog grow up at their own pace.

Jinx's preliminary results also came back! Her PennHIP scores are 0.25 and 0.36, which are both GREAT. The median score for GSDs is 0.38, with almost 20,000 evaluations. Meaning her hips scored better than more than half of all GSDs!

Jinx's OFA results are a little bit more frustrating. She was graded borderline due to slight subluxation. Borderline essentially means that OFA was unable to make a determination one way or the other and is NOT saying she has dysplasia. Again, because I did PennHIP, this was a big surprise to me. PennHIP also found zero evidence of dysplasia and gave her really good scores, which are based on laxity. Most dogs who are borderline in their prelims receive a FAIR grade on their finals, but with her, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she went GOOD. OFA can be overly harsh on prelim ratings. Based on what I've seen in other dogs in confirmation and scoring, I am still feeling very good about these results!

SUPER exciting news!!! Denali went EXCELLENT on her OFA score!! OF 143,806 evaluations, less than 5% of German Shepherds receive an excellent rating. This coupled with her PennHIP scores of 0.23 and 0.32 mean this girl appears to have some STELLER hips. She also had her Elbows graded and received a Normal rating, which is what all passing elbows get and is also great news!

I am such a huge proponent of using PennHIP and OFA together. I think they both provide valuable information and using both gives such much more information than using one alone, especially when it comes to using OFA without PennHIP. Just to give an example, Ares- Denali's sire- had PennHIP scores of 0.22 and 0.31 and received an OFA grade of GOOD. If I hadn't done PennHIP I wouldn't have know just how good his hips were.

I'll be sending Denali's PennHIP to OFA to add to her profile soon as well- everything will be publicly available for anyone to see.

I walk up and down these stairs several times a day. The dogs follow me up and down them without fail. But the second I decide to leave, before I even put my shoes on or grab my keys, when I've barely consciously made the decision to go, they are immediately stationed at the door for the mere chance at getting to go out too. Many times they do NOT get to go. But their desire is so strong that when the signal comes, they are there, ready. Behaviors are created and maintained through motivation and classical conditioning. Harnessing and manipulating that can seem so difficult, yet, here they are, waiting at the door excited and ready, with no intent on my part at all.

Just wow at this little puppy (not so little anymore!). I love everything about her. From her food drive (she WILL launch herself onto the table for a plate of food), her growing work ethic, and her goofy personality (definitely copied straight from Ember) training her is so much fun. I do have to be mindful during our luring sessions for fear she might take a finger. Yet, when our almost 2-year-old grabbed a piece of food and shoved it at her, she took it as gentle as could be. The two of them are best friends, following each other everywhere and sharing little adventures. He adores her and her him. We are very excited to see what's in store for this girl.

Ember Von Den Weidefeuer—this girl is everything. I couldn’t love her more if I tried! This video is such a perfect glimpse into her goofy, lovable personality.

Throwback to some early training. It's crazy to see how differently I trained then. These days, my heels take months and months to develop and we are still working on them, but that end product is going to be 🤌

I'm not going to lie, sometimes balancing being a mom and a serious dog sport competitor, who's dogs need a LOT of foundation can be quite the juggling act. Sometimes it means ending a session early. Other times, it adds just the right amount of distraction to the session. It can be fun though. Arlo has started saying "yes" to the dogs whenever they do something he likes. At this rate he'll be handling his own dog by the time he's 4 😂

Owning GSDs isn't always easy. While we regularly utilize well secured kennels and crates for the dogs, free time is a big part of their lives too. Some dogs prefer to be as free as possible. 🤦‍♀️

This!! Dog socialization is all about creating neutrality in public places. Especially with a breed like GSDs who generally do not enjoy playing with strange dogs. It always starts the same with their puppy at first seeming to do well, but as they grow developing reactivity problems due to being forced into close interactions they do not enjoy or know how to get out of.

We are enjoying this warmer weather before it gets cold again. Denali is enjoying more than the rest of us though 😂
