We pray our pets never get lost! Make sure you offer them the best chance of being found and identified with microchips that identify AND with a GPS tracker tag. Microchips are only great IF they are found, while trackers help to find them. Hiking season has begun, so thought you should be best prepared.

Dr. Haring & staff are absolutely amazing people and the overall atmosphere of this veterinary office sets it apart from most in that it’s a more welcoming, warm home-style space that I’m sure all animals that go there appreciate! I know it makes a difference in my perspective!

Hear me say OUCH 👂
When your pet’s ear looks like it’s about to give birth , it’s time for help.
Aural hematomas occur when the ear flap fills with blood after a blood vessel within the flap is traumatized. This oftentimes occurs when the pet excessively scratches at the ear and or shakes his/her head.
Small hematomas may be healed without surgery with medication alone but large ones are extremely painful and require surgical intervention, and medical intervention. Surgery allows the ear flap to be drained. Special sutures then get placed to hold the ear flap together to prevent blood from filling within the ear flap again. Relief! 🐾🩺🐶😺👌🏻

Before and after, Jack Daniels is just 5 weeks into treatment for nasal arteritis. This inflammatory condition requires life long treatment. He has a dedicated family that has been nursing him to a more comfortable, safe life. Without their devotion, he would be susceptible to severe, life threatening hemorrhage from arteries that are beneath this ulcerated region.

Yari, rescued from Out of the Pits, came from having heartworm disease, a terrible pregnancy, loss of most of her puppies, to this happy, loved rescue dog 🐶🐾🩺❤️
She was in the “kill list”, like too too too many.
Consider rescuing any species you love! There is a rescue organization just waiting for you to come.

Skin, an organ we all have, is the mirror to what’s going on inside of your pet’s body. Poor Nilla developed some behavioral changes that were subtle at first. She started to hide more, and drink more. One day her family noticed she had a very large rip in her skin. Upon evaluation, we realized Nilla had paper thin, super fragile skin. Her skin was so fragile that it could not be repaired with standard skin sutures, for fear it would be damaged further. She has required large bandages with special topical medication to cover her skin. Weeks have gone by. Much testing has occurred. Ultimately, skin biopsies and blood test results have determined she’s a diabetic and has Cushing’s syndrome. This is a combination that is very rare, so rare internal medicine consultants are intrigued and have joined forces with Dr. Haring and the FPS team to devise a treatment plan for Nilla.
What’s her treatment:
-tons of LOVE ❤️
-intermittent bandage changes to heal her large skin sores.
-trilostane, a drug to help control the excessive cortisol (naturally occurring steroids in the body) that develops during Cushing’s syndrome. This will help reduce her many symptoms, such as skin fragility, excessive thirst, urination, appetite, muscle weakness, lethargy, as well as allowing for better control of her diabetes.
-Senvelgo, a newly released oral drug to treat diabetes. The oral drug to treat diabetes is new to the veterinary world, so there’s apprehension to jump to using it. Cats that are currently getting insulin cannot be transitioned to this medication or the other oral diabetic drug called Bexacat. Unfortunately there are no oral diabetic drugs for our barking friends.🐶

It’s great that this drug allows us to avoid giving Nilla twice daily insulin injections that would further risk damage to her super fragile skin. Nilla will be very closely monitored.
-amlodipine to treat her high blood pressure, another common problem associated with Cushing’s.

You can tell that her care is complex and without an extremely dedicated family none of this would be possible.

This cat belongs to Zack, an FPS assistant, who is currently studying to be a veterinarian! 🩺🐾😺

Spring has almost sprung and before long we will be in the peak of heartworm spreading to our K9 friends and even our ferret and feline friends.
The season is long……12 months long.
Eons ago the best practice was believed to start our pets on a medication in March and end it in November.
Eons ago we only treated dogs with preventative medication.
Eons ago our preventative options were super limited to tablets only.
Well pet parents , thank goodness for medical advances, testing abilities and awareness!
We know our dogs, ferrets and cats can die from this super preventable disease and now with so many different preventative options—-tabs, topicals and they are made by numerous companies. It helps drive prevention costs down when numerous drug companies make similar drugs and when generic options exist too!
Ask your vet about the options which exist for prevention meds so you can best tailor it to your pet.
Some of the misconceptions about heartworm disease:
-your pets get it from water, when it’s from nasty mosquitoes
-your pets are tested by their 💩samples, when it’s from a blood sample
-heartworm disease is only a summer disease, when it’s now medically common knowledge amongst The Heartworm Association and veterinarians that it’s a 12 month problem
-dogs get the disease by eating 💩, when in fact it’s cats, dogs and ferrets acquiring from nasty mosquitoes
-all mosquitoes spread the disease, when it’s only those mosquitoes that are infected, and only when they bite the pet and give the pet a blood borne microscopic stage called microfilaria
-you can stop and start prevention medication whenever you remember, when actually it’s only safe for them to start the medication after they have been blood tested and shown to be heartworm negative

What a story!
Our buddy, as we call him Murray the Murphy♥️🐶
To think dog fighting occurs 😡
He’s the gentlest dog one could meet and quite frankly he should be aggressive towards humans, as they hurt him.
He fell into the arms of the kindest humans ever and we are so blessed to know him and to have helped him through a life threatening illness that caused him to have almost no platelets in his body. We all require platelets to prevent us from bleeding to death. Thankfully we identified his condition and put him into remission from immune mediated thrombocytopenia!!!
We love you Murray ♥️

Happy Happy Birthday to Linda!
She’s aged with grace and is now a late teen.
We love this little lady. She’s survived so many issues since I first met her and began her care. She was a stray on the streets of Puerto Rico, when her pet parents first found her. She has a devoted family. They have supported her through near death illnesses, has nearly died on a number of occasions and is now taking many supportive medications to allow her the best life she can have 🐶🎂🩺🎉We commend her pet parents for taking such wonderful care of Linda. I’ve no doubt her delicious cake is from her mom’s wonderful boutique in Saratoga

We are thrilled to announce we are now the exclusive veterinary care provider for our beloved furry friends at The Lucky Puppy Rescue for their New York adoption center location in Argyle. The staff at For Pet's Sake are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of animals that need our help the most. As these pups are transported from Florida it is important to recognize unique health considerations they may face, while ensuring a smooth transition and a healthy start for each pup. Dr. Haring has been working closely with The Lucky Puppy Rescue to ensure optimal standards of care, and educating volunteers on best practices to prevent and recognize illness.

It is refreshing to work with a shelter diligently committed to the overall physical, and emotional welfare of their residents.
